Thank you so much to everyone who joined us at ARTS Southeast on Saturday for our Panel Discussion surrounding the work and life of celebrated Savannah artist, Preston Orr — and a special thank you to Mary Hartman, Marcus Kenney, Debora Oden, and Lily Kate Conneff for sharing their time and memories with us! It was an incredible turnout, and we loved the stories shared about Preston Orr and the Savannah art scene in the 90s.
🎥 For those of you who missed the event, keep your eyes peeled for the full recording coming soon!

Don’t miss your opportunity to see Preston Orr’s work in person in his solo exhibition “King of Squares,” currently on display in The Ellis Gallery at ARTS Southeast until Saturday, June 13th. Plan your visit today to experience the material curiosity and fearlessness that defines his work.
GALLERY HOURS: Thurs – Sun, 12 - 5PM, or by appointment.
Browse the exhibition digitally using the link in our bio.
CLOSING RECEPTION: Friday, June 5th, 5 - 9PM

Preston James Orr (1968–2022) was born in Columbia, South Carolina and studied fine art at the College of Charleston before eventually settling in Savannah. Here, he became part of a close-knit community of artists, and was known for his love of kayaking and the outdoors. After Orr’s passing in 2022, his artwork was entrusted to the care of artist and friend, Mary Hartman.
Orr’s work expresses something ineffable – errant marks resemble fragments of text, like ancient graffiti on cave walls. Laid bare in resin, Preston elevated materials that even the most adventurous artists overlook or discard: toilet paper, caviar, crack lighters from beneath the floorboards of an abandoned house.

Our Silent Auction Fundraiser for the Ossabaw Island Residency has been EXTENDED! Place bids for these fabulous items now through Monday, May 25th, at 8PM using the link in our bio.
Your support will go directly towards costs associated with the first residency cohort, including: Private housing on Ossabaw Island, all meals during the residency period, and transportation from Savannah to and from the island.
Join the list of generous funders and support this important project by making a bid or a donation to ARTS Southeast’s Ossabaw Island Residency!
#artistresidency #ossabawisland #art912 #southernart #artinsavannah
Beginning this fall, two cohorts of artists will be selected to spend focused time on Ossabaw, Georgia’s third-largest barrier island. Just south of Savannah, Georgia, and accessible only by boat, Ossabaw features 26,000 acres of undeveloped maritime forest, tidal wetlands, and Atlantic shoreline. It is protected by the State of Georgia as a heritage preserve to be used for natural, scientific, and cultural study. The Ossabaw Island Residency both advances ARTS Southeast’s commitment to deep creative inquiry by providing artists time and space on Ossabaw and continues the island’s tradition of multidisciplinary study rooted in nature, culture, and reflection first established in 1961 by Eleanor Torrey West and Clifford B. West.
The residency is intended for artists’ ideas to emerge and take shape, free from urban distractions. It is open to emerging, mid-career, and established artists across disciplines who are encouraged to pursue self-directed work shaped by solitude, a sense of place, and the pace of natural rhythms.
With great thanks to our Founding Sponsors:
National Endowment for the Arts, the Judith Alexander Foundation, the Suzanne Fitzallen Jackson Foundation, Laney Contemporary, Betsy Cain, Helen Hamada, Karen Karp, Beryl Gilothwest, Joshua Milliken, and Jo Ann Miles

Figure/Ground
May 21st – October 17th, 2026
ARTS Southeast
Savannah, Georgia

ARTS Southeast is pleased to present “Figure/Ground,” a Summer Group Exhibition of work by our community of Artist Supporters in the Supporter Gallery.
The human figure has been a subject for artists for thousands of years, grounding us in who we are individually and collectively. From ancient cave paintings to contemporary questions of identity, authorship and representation, documenting ourselves and capturing the likenesses of others is deeply human. For this exhibition, artists were invited to submit figurative work in any medium. Whether traditional or alternative media, realism or abstraction, each work featured contemplates the human form.
Featured Artists: Carmela Aliffi, Adrienne Berkland, Anna Falk, Joshua Gary, Alejandro Giraldo, Izzy Giusti, Allison Horner, Jazz Howington, Elena Jones, Nae’Keisha Jones, Ryan Madson, Debra Malschick, Holly Mathews, Crisley McCarson, Isaac McCaslin, Victoria Mercado-Lues, Patty Meriam, Melanie Mills, Ashutosh Rokade, Richard T. Scott, Livia Schuman, Stephanie Stella, Talia Sullivan, Jenna Watson, Roe Zaplinksi

Mimi Plumb has photographed the human-altered landscape for five decades to conjure the enduring issues of our day. “Blazing Light: Photographs by Mimi Plumb”, the artist’s first solo museum exhibition, which opened in February 2026 at the High Museum of Art, brings together her three most important bodies of work that collectively contemplate the anxieties of contemporary American culture: the combined effects of climate change, unbridled capitalism and ceaseless military conflict.
She skillfully renders California’s notoriously intense sunlight in gritty black-and-white images to amplify the psychological tension and imaginative possibilities that define turbulent times. Across multiple bodies of work, Plumb mournfully charts how persistent unease continues to manifest from the dark realms of imagination into pressing realities.
IMPACT is honored to feature a fascinating conversation with Mimi Plumb and Gregory J. Harris, Curator of Photography at the High Museum of Art, in Vol. 5 No. 1. “Blazing Light” travels from Atlanta to the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, opening June 13.

Join us Wednesday, May 27th at 6PM for an Artist Talk with our May @onviewresidency Artist-in-Residence, Hannah Keats! @hannah_keats
During her residency, Keats will build off her current research to create an immersive installation for viewers that fosters dialogue about humanity’s interactions with technology and the natural world. Through a combination of digital printing, collage, laser cutting, and painting, Keats constructs sculptural paintings that mimic the forms of coral and fungi to build immersive environments for viewers which system from her response to the natural world, and aim to create a sense of awe. These pieces will switch between small paintings and lenticular prints to larger spatial interventions that go from the wall to the floor, allowing the work to enmesh viewers in a space completely. By integrating the methods of world-building used in speculative fiction, Keats aims to construct immersive environments that allow viewers to explore the boundaries between artificial and organic systems.
🗓️ PROJECT FINALE: Friday, June 5th from 5 - 9PM in conjunction with First Fridays in Starland
