Arts Midwest
Amplifying Midwestern Creativity

$1.88 per person.
That's the average of what states invested in the arts this year. But averages hide a lot.
In the Midwest, the real numbers range from $0.20 to $7.85, including #1 in the nation (Minnesota) and #48 (Wisconsin).
Nationally, legislative appropriations to state arts agencies totaled $646 million in FY2026, a 5.9% decrease from last year.
And most concerning, population growth and inflation have reduced the real value of arts support over 25 years.
When converted to 2001 dollars, FY2026’s per capita funding of $1.88 equals just $1.04. Compared to $1.57 in 2001, that means a real decline of 34%.

Art is not just about expression—it's a form of labor, entrepreneurship, and contribution to community life.
It's time you (the artist) realize what an impact your work has on other local industries (the economy). Think galleries, venues, festivals, businesses, and all the visitors that go to these spaces.
Your art is powering the larger system. How can we talk about that impact to create change?
Learn how to frame your work, find data, and use it at the link in our bio. And keep on creating—it helps everyone!

Culture is here, in North Dakota.
That's the idea central to Asian Night Market in Fargo. Since 2022, the annual event fills up a local aviation museum with food, art, vendors, cultural activities, and performances.
North Dakota is said to have the fastest growing AAPI population, and Asian Night Market is a celebration of those communities. In the last four years, the event attendance has quadrupled!
If you’re in the Fargo-Moorhead area, you can join this year’s festivities on May 30 at the Fargo Air Museum.

A museum by and for the people.
The Haitian American Museum of Chicago is celebrating a new building.
They're asking, “How can we transform the museum so that it is a space of, by, and for the Haitian community, and be what they need us to be?”
One way: no admission fee! Just a $5 suggested donation.
“Taking away that financial barrier means lots of people who have never gone to a museum, or heard of this museum, are now learning about Haiti.”
Now an Arts and Wellness GIG Fund grant is helping them to continue breaking down barriers by bringing artist workshops into Chicago schools that don’t have art teachers or curriculum.

You may think a brand in the traditional sense isn’t for you.
And you’re right (sort of). You’re an artist, not some corporate entity, right?
But if you think you don’t have to worry about your brand as a professional artist, we’ve got news for you: it already exists.
So, let's find the words and tell the world.

It's sure to be a whirlwind of a weekend.
Art-A-Whirl returns to Minneapolis, Minnesota, May 15-17.
It's the largest open artist studio tour in the country.
What started in 1995 as a grassroots effort by local artists has grown into a celebration of creativity in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.
"Check out" this Midwest library!
The Mercantile Library has been serving readers, writers, and thinkers since 1835.
It's a membership library—but the memberships are affordable thanks in part to its 10,000-year lease.
With almost daily events, there's more than just books to enjoy.
For us, we might make a Midwest move to attend Stationary Club, because who doesn't love nerding out about pens and paper (quietly)?
