The City of Dallas’s public call for input on the future of Dallas City Hall received more than 400 submissions. One proposal that showed promise while preserving the distinctive building designed by I. M. Pei is City South, came from studio work at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (@utacappa) with pragmatic input from the 10 Presidents, a group of individuals who have served in leadership roles in local organizations like AIA Dallas (@aiadallas).

The CAPPA studio retains Dallas City Hall in its broader strategy of reorientation for Downtown Dallas. City South is ambitious. The proposal includes a new arena for the Dallas Mavericks as well as myriad mixed-use programming with an emphasis on housing. Its renderings convey a big statement about the potential future of this North Texas city. But the plan and process are where the CAPPA studio makes the most compelling case to date for the future of Dallas’s civic core, let alone the Downtown as a whole.

Isabel Strauss has won a competition to design a public restroom outside the Gropius House (@historicnewengland)—the 1938 home of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius in Lincoln, Massachusetts.

Strauss is assistant professor of architecture at Smith College. Previously she was a curatorial contractor at the National Museum of African American History and Culture; and she worked for SOM, Johnston Marklee, MASS, and XL Scenic.

The forthcoming restroom by Strauss will replace an existing porta potty next to a garage designed by Gropius. The garage will remain in place.

Strauss’s design is inspired in part by the garage, but also works by Marcel Breuer and Herzog & de Meuron.

Jurors received over 280 submissions from 40 countries.

Strauss was shortlisted alongside AUYON BACHAR; Mohsen Laei, Nasim Shirkhani, and Masoumeh Niyazi; Monika Puchała and Tomasz Sachanowicz; and Payette.

Construction workers have started the arduous process of dismantling Vaillancourt Fountain, a Brutalist sculpture by Armand Vaillancourt in San Francisco’s Lawrence Halprin–designed Embarcadero Plaza.

Workers began deconstruction by picking at the grout. Due to stress cracks, asbestos, and lead, construction workers are wearing protective equipment.

Talks about demolishing or removing the structure have swirled for some time. Last summer a proposal for a larger park left the status of the piece unknown.

Many folks have remarked that LACMA David Geffen Galleries’ panoramic facade is cinematic and reference auteur directors. But maybe it’s a rom-com? In a Jane Austen novel, this would be the détournement—the plot twist when the protagonist’s object of derision turns to one of affection, if not desire. The Pritzker Prize–winning architect’s scheme has been my Mr. Darcy since its black flower—a tribute to a tar puddle—was first revealed in 2012.

At his best, Zumthor is a wizard of phenomenology, as evidenced in the kindness of the spring light that relaxed the unrelenting concrete—inside and out: plazas, walls, floor slab, roof slab, all atmospherically mottled with lime stains and formwork traces. The building’s best qualities have little to do with mass or form, but with the way sunlight plays along surfaces, casting shadows and creating infinite reflections. It’s particularly seductive toward cocktail hour. Given that daylight is a liability for most museums, it’s a risk that pays off.
