The first female student at the ETH School of Architecture:

Flora Steiger-Crawford is regarded as the first female architecture student at ETH Zurich, receiving her diploma in 1923 as the first woman to do so. However, as early as 1899, the American Adelheid Lange had paved the way for women to study at the School of Architecture.

In the design studio of Professor Débora Mesa Molina, students constructed 29 tables using a wide range of materials and supporting structures.

In the first three weeks of the semester, the studio became a laboratory for full-scale experimentation and hands-on construction, a teaching concept that D-ARCH is also expanding in other studios.

Photos of projects by Marla Brunner, Florence Kummer, Elia Mele, Mea Quint; Tiberius Schneider, Enrico Pugliese, Luca Stauffacher; Anouk Widmer, Sébastien Napierala; Olivier Beaud, Carlo Benucci, Thomas Näf, Ivan Neher; Yuliya Degtyaryova, Inken Ladiges, Trera Rudek; Ece Babucoglu, Rahel Büchi, Vinciane Deslarzes, Jael Spalinger; Sofie Heinzl, Daphne Nicolakis, Carmen Scherer; Nderim Dakaj, David Gnehm, Yanis Mameli; Philippe Keller, Luis Pablo Matheu, Yegana Sakhipoor, Sofia Sologuren

Congratulations to the architecture practice and visiting studio TEN, winners of the 2026 Spotlight Award from Rice School of Architecture.

Established in 2009, the Spotlight Award honours architects who demonstrate extraordinary design curiosity and excellence within the first fifteen years of their practice.

“Their work reminds us that design innovation is strongest when we allow different voices and formats—from material research to algorithmic experiments—to play in concert with one another”, says Igor Marjanović, William Ward Watkin Dean of the Rice School of Architecture.

TEN are teaching visiting studios at the Department of Architecture of ETH Zurich from 2025 to 2027, invited by the Institute of Design and Architecture (IEA).

The current issue of archithese presents the latest results of the earth research conducted by Roger Boltshauser’s team at ETH Zurich.

It includes articles on hybrid construction, research questions, and material studies. The issue highlights connections to Louis I. Kahn’s architecture and the influence of art on architectural practice. And it presents new teaching methods in the first year at D‑ARCH and showcases student projects.
