AUGUST 16, TMF parade & THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS COSTUME CONTEST IN THE WORLD!
I didn't plan to be a parade coordinator for Team Chlorociboria. I was planning to walk alongside my little Samanita. But with the Elven Cups being immobile and relying on mushrooms with stipes made for walking, I did so. Jessie asked me to get Hamilton's team by them so they could progress through the parade together, which turned out to be an impossible feat due to the colossal size of Hamilton's pholiota 🤣🤣🤣 Instead, I played the part of Fezzik from The Princess Bride, clearing the path for the stick to roll through. "Everybody MOOOOOOOVE!" And then when dear Riitta wanted to yell the "We. Love. MUSHROOMS!" chant, no one could hear her. So I became the parade cheerleader for her every time she asked for it. As well as being the photographer and videographer and assisting in pulling the bobsled-style costume.
Down at the drum circle, I didn't plan to be an award coordinator for Team Hamilton, but as I joined the celebrating with the two teams, Ham, also very mobility challenged, requested photography. He needed to sit. Under an Aspen tree. As is appropriate for his species. I found him an Aspen tree and cleared humans out of his path. I got him a photographer. He needed his dad Lawrence and brother @i.am.evo.lucien , so I got them, then pulled in the rest of the team and more photographers. When it was time for the awards, I cleared the path for Hamilton to walk through the crowd to the stage. And then many hands helped release him from The Unbearable Weight of Massive Costumery and we all just basked in the joy of celebrating mushrooms through art and love.
Always and forever

WE. LOVE. MUSHROOMS!

All. The. Vids!

My fifth year attending @telluridemushroomfest and it never disappoints. 🏔️🍄
From world class lectures on groundbreaking research to Colorado’s newly recognized state mushroom DJing the party, truly nothing compares.
This year the stakes were ridiculously high for the annual costume parade contest and I was honored to serve as a pleasing fungus beetle for the most highly decorated and venerated “Pike’s Peak Team” of @therealjesslangley @kenbinsley and @meteoriitta.
Their hyperrealistic, macroversion of Chlorociboria spp. growing on a stick, stunned the crowd. Ben’s mom created the cutest jeweler’s loupe for scale and I got to crawl about, as the pleasing fungus beetle is known to feed on wood decaying fungus such as Chlorociboria (photo for reference taken by myself in Boulder County, c. 2019).
But the competition was fierce and friend turned pseudo-villain, @hamiltonsmushrooms, cinched the crown with his *51 pound* Pholiota crafted by his father, @lawrencepevec.
All in all, fun, creativity, and love for our Earth and all her creatures were the real champions that day. 🍄🟫🪲🩵
FUN FACT: The mycelium of Chlorociboria stains wood this glorious turquoise color. It is highly sought after for decorative wood inlays such as on violins.
P.S. It was so sweet to celebrate Agaricus julius as our new @costatemushroom and meet in person the team that worked on the project together. Shout out to @g_sanchizzel for his excellent “bill” costume!

🌼 One of my favorite springs now blooming with gorgeous, mood lifting, monkeyflower (Erythranthe guttata)!
She’s a little known medicinal but popping just a few of these crisp blooms in your mouth will brighten your spirits and attune you to this vibe right here. 🌀 This was such a treat to find pre-infused, flower essence spring water.
Find her in rocky stream beds above 9k ft.

🔎🍄🏔️ Scientific Camping Mushroom Foray on the Grand Mesa
A Wild Weekend of Mushroom Science and Connection
Join the Western Colorado Mycological Association for a unique outdoor adventure on the Grand Mesa, the world’s largest flat-topped mountain!
Led by Dr. Amy Honan of Crested Butte Botanical Gardens, Anne Lee Foster of the Fungal Diversity Survey, and the MycoReach Mobile Lab Van, this guided mushroom foray blends camping, community, and hands-on fungi exploration in one of Colorado’s most biodiverse alpine forests. We’ll focus on documenting fungal biodiversity and also have the opportunity to culture some of our finds.
The study of funga is about 100 years behind other biological sciences so properly recording species distribution and rarity is critical. We then use this to inform conservation efforts. We can’t protect it, if we don’t know it’s there!
📍Grand Mesa, Colorado (we will send you the campground location after registration)
📆2pm, Friday, August 29 - 1pm, Sunday, August 31, 2025
😁 Crested Butte Botanical Gardens, Fungal Diversity Survey, MycoLove MycoReach Van, Western Colorado Mycological Association
💸 $30 per person to cover cost of campsites (18 spots available)
There will be opportunities to join the forays for the day!
First come, first serve campsite available at the campground and nearby. Grand Mesa Lodge and Cedaredge are also close by if you want to book your own accommodations besides camping–register to join for the day and snag your own lodging nearby.
🌲 What’s to expect:
-Daily guided mushroom hikes led by expert foragers
-Learn to properly document funga and take samples for DNA sequencing
-Field ID workshops to help you recognize edible, medicinal, and -toxic species
-Demonstrations on how to clone wild specimens for home cultivation
-UV night foray
-Contribute to the furthering of mycological science!
-Summer wilderness fun!
Comment below and I’ll DM you the 🔗 to register!
