Honoured to have the Shima Dress showcased at @sxswsydney this past week as part of the tech and innovation showcase!
Part of my 2024 Honours Collection ‘Double Vision’, the Shima Dress explores the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and digital innovation. The garment was created using the Shima Seiki Wholegarment Knit machine and its accompanying CAD programs, which produces seamless knitwear directly from programmed design, eliminating the need for cut-and-sew construction and significantly reducing material waste. The yarn was hand-dyed with natural indigo, referencing my Indian heritage and its deep connection to earth-based, sustainable dyeing practices. This slow, tactile process stands in contrast to the speed of digital knitting—highlighting a conversation between old and new, hand and machine and how sustainable practices can come from looking to the past as well as the future. Made from 100% merino wool and dyed naturally, the dress is fully biodegradable, leaving no microplastics or toxic residue at the end of its lifecycle. The ability to knit to exact specifications also minimises sampling and overproduction, two major contributors to fashion waste. The Shima Dress proposes a future where emerging technology and ancestral knowledge coexist, offering a vision for fashion that is efficient, intentional, and rooted in care.
Special thank you my tutors at the University of Technology Sydney who helped me with this project: Nga Wun (Doris) LI, Shirley Tam, Joanna Fowles @joannafowles, Kinae Kim @eseu266

My collection is an exploration of what it means to be of dual cultural identity - looking at it through a lens of past and present, combining traditional Indian textiles of Kalamkari and natural dye with contemporary streetwear interpretations. The garments are meant to celebrate handcrafted textiles against a modern fashion backdrop.
