Sam Maffett
I run. I ride. I have fun with my family and consider myself to be very lucky with what I have.

I love mountains.
I’m fortunate enough to have visited a few of the world’s mountain ranges but the scale of the Himalayas was unlike anything I’d seen before.
Loved it.
We’re already planning our return trip (as a family).

The Manaslu Trail Race will be an experience I won’t forget in a long long time.
So many aspects of the last 2 weeks have been new and memorable and these photos only represent but a few of the adventures we had, including:
> Being amongst the mighty Himalayas and the sheer scale of these mountains, valleys and glaciers
> The friendly Nepali and Tibetan people who continue to live their traditional subsistence living in a harsh alpine climate
> The camaraderie between the 55 runners doing the race, from 20 different countries
> Hard running at altitude where it feels like your lungs will burst from your chest
> The post race banter, card games and laughs in the tea houses each evening
> Being immersed in the mountains, the race, the climate and away from our home environment and connections for ~11 days.
On a race perspective, I tried really hard, remained injury free and am proud to have finished 3rd overall, behind 2 incredible Nepali athletes who I hope get the chance to race overseas in the future. Thanks for the race BJ and Bishal. @bijayranamagarr
Stage races are fun and Nepal is the ultimate mountain playground. I’ll be back

So far, so awesome… I’m 5 days into my trail running race around Manaslu here in Nepal and I’m breathless in more ways than one.
The Himalayas and everything about the area are exceeding my expectations. The mountains are HUGE, the Nepali culture is beautiful, the porters + mules + locals have incredible strength and the region has an undeveloped simplicity that’s nice to pass through.
Racing is going well. It’s hard, rocky and steep with the first 4 days being ~25km a day with ~2,000m of climbing each day. I’m holding onto 3rd overall with just 2 Nepali runners ahead of me (they are in a class of their own). But the results are very secondary to the whole experience of sharing it with the 55 other runners from around the world.
We started at 650m asl and have worked our way deep into the mountains - topping out at Manaslu Base Camp and 4,800m so far with much more to come (so far with just a blood nose up high). Into the peaks we go!

Visiting Nepal has been a long held dream since I was a child reading mountaineering books or as a university student doing a bit of climbing myself. So I’m pretty excited to be heading there tomorrow for a nine day trail race in the Manaslu area. @manaslutrailrace
Since learning about and entering the race just two months ago I’ve been training pretty consistently and I am happy with where I’m at. There have been countless hill repeats, double day gym sessions, tired legs and Physio appointments to get me to where I am now.
This is a milestone trip to celebrate my 50th year, remembering that I did UTMB on my 40th year - so it’s just me going, leaving the family behind this time 😞
Here’s a few photos of my training over the last 10 weeks. Keep an eye out for a few more from some bigger mountains soon.
Thanks also to the few brands who have helped with some equipment to tackle the height to come.

I look forward to my annual trip to Central Australia every year - these pictures capture a few reasons why…
Run Larapinta was as special as always - thanks to the runners who joined the fun.
The Shimano Gravel Muster simply exceptional - cycling camaraderie like I’ve never seen before.
Many thanks to our hard working Rapid Ascent team for delivering these experiences for others to embrace.

It was the quintessential Aussie road trip… the last school holidays we loaded up the van with bikes, surf boards and camping gear and drove to the Gold Coast and back.
Along the way we stopped at 6 different MTB, scored a few waves, played a round of golf and scared ourselves silly on roller coasters and water slides.
Simple, honest fun.
(If you’re driving up the Pacific Highway it’s definitely worth taking MTBs and stopping at some of the bike parks within just 10min of the fwy).

Weekends like this one are exactly why we moved to the bush… so we can use machines and muscle to build our own jump line, so we can have a bunch of kids over to muck around on bikes, so we can build a shed, fix a leaking pipe, have a fire, build a garden, (even space for Dad’s dog) and so much more. Gundrys Rd is going well, 8 more jumps to build!

My work and involvement with Rapid Ascent is a big part of my life and where I direct a lot of my energy. So I get a bit nervous and anxious when our biggest annual event comes around - the Margaret River Ultra Marathon.
Why? I feel a strong obligation to do a good job given that many of the ~2,000 competitorshave committed a lot to the event in terms of training time, family sacrifices, financial costs and more. Gulp…! it’s an event with a lot on the line.
Well, I think I can safely say mission accomplished! - it was a huge success (phew!).
The spectacular landscape and finish line at Howard Park Wines, the warm sunny weather and a great team of colleagues helped us to deliver something amazing. Combined with the runners’ energy and enthusiasm and its been a very memorable week that’s filled me with pride.
Thank you to all involved.

Most people might celebrate their 50th birthday by booking into a plush resort and doing nothing all day - SCREW THAT!
I wanted to embrace life and share some adventures rather than lying by a pool watching my vigor fade away. So for my 50th birthday we went hiking as a family through our magnificent Alpine area and camped on the flanks of my favorite mountain - Mt Feathertop. It was perfect.
I also drew great satisfaction from showing more of my favorite outdoor areas to the kids and building their excitement for future adventures in this area in winter and summer.
Bring on the next 50 years

I’m feeling content after a solid mountain run yesterday (also feeling a little cooked!).
As well as satisfying my soul, it was great to see some landmarks I’ve not visited for 30+ years like Staircase Spur, Cleave Col hut, Big River and Ropers.
S49.98 : this is the first of a few adventures tires I’ve got planned during my decade turning year.

Good times and great family experiences… we’ve been in Queenstown NZL for a couple of weeks now and are making the most of the mountains around us - riding, hiking, and then a bit more riding every day. We love it.
About 8 months ago we arranged a house swap with some friends so have a great place to chill / recover between activities. Thanks @sophie_kennedy and @scott_kennedy!
(In fact we’ve now spent more time in their house than in our own new place that we only just moved into before we left!).
Making memories to last a lifetime. More adventures to come…
