life update!!

as some of y’all may know, i’ve been spending the last few months learning to tattoo with a machine 😗 i’m super excited to share this new lil chapter of my life — it’s been wonderful being able to make time to draw again but with a new and challenging medium.

a reflection on being 29:

this year was a year of recalibrating my goals, of nurturing connection, of community care, of setting boundaries and learning how to fulfill my own needs. i never expected to leave 29 in the way that i have, and honestly… i’m scared of what 30 has to bring. 30 is marking a huge period of transition in many aspects of my life (too much if you ask me rn lol) and while change is hard and destabilizing, i know that it will help me build a stronger foundation. i hope all u friends who are in or past your 30s are right about how great being in your 30s is 😮‍💨

i know i never shut up about climbing but this silly sport has taught me so much, especially in the past year - of following my gut, trusting my instincts, listening to my body and its needs, and processing fear and feeling strong enough to move past it. this has applied to so much more than just climbing and i’m soooo grateful to be surrounded by people who support me and empower me.

i’m not really sure where i’m going with this lol but i’ve never believed in shit like mercury in retrograde and saturn in aries and year of the fire horse and whatever the fuck else, but it’s all pointed towards what 30 is shaping out to be. so here’s to 30, i guess 🤪 if you have any advice for this new decade PLEASE i will take any morsel

help us keep a neighbor housed and fed! they are taking care of a two-year-old and three-month-old and are running out of money after sheltering in place for two months and not being able to work.

update (3/2): the family has shared that their abuelita has passed away and had to use a large portion of these funds to cover her burial costs. they are struggling to make ends meet after over three months of sheltering in place and not being able to work. anything helps!

@cjoy_climb planted the idea of coming out to squamish earlier this year — i wanted to go soooo bad, but i struggled to find someone to make the long, 30 hour drive from minneapolis with me. i questioned if i would have fun planning a big road trip by myself, living out of my car for an extended period of time, and being in squamish with no real plan or agenda. while i’ve taken a couple solo trips out to bishop and the red earlier this year to work for @heyflashfoxy climbing festivals, this felt like the first trip i’ve taken that was solely for me, on my own timeline, and to just focus on climbing and having fun.

i showed up with no hopes and dreams about climbing anything in particular and no goals on what i wanted to accomplish — and i’m soooo glad i did that. my previous climbing trips were shaped by my disappointment of not ticking off certain climbs, certain grades, and climbing as much as i could even when i didn’t want to, just so i would make the “most” out of my visit. for the next two years, climbing outside felt scary, overly self-critical, and no longer fun. i made the most out of squamish by giggling in the woods, rolling around in moss, making new friends, and trying boulders only when they inspired me, even if it meant i rarely made it to the top.

just a few highlights from my trip to the land of flowing water 🌊

feeling an immense amount of gratitude to have had the opportunity to recreate on this land and the trust from @catlikeacat and the team at @heyflashfoxy to have me as a photographer — this was my first time being hired as a photographer, and to be able to do this for a climbing festival that celebrates trans people, gender expansive folks, and women was so, so special.

connecting with people, especially bipoc and/or queer folks, is why i got into this sport and has always been the root of why i love rock climbing. as someone who is deeply competitive and self critical, i do tend lose sight of that sometimes — but this trip has reminded me to take a step back and remember what’s truly important: not to climb hard, but to appreciate and take care of the land with likeminded people.
