life update!!

as some of y’all may know, i’ve been spending the last few months learning to tattoo with a machine 😗 i’m super excited to share this new lil chapter of my life — it’s been wonderful being able to make time to draw again but with a new and challenging medium.

please give @inkyschminky a follow to check out what i’ve been working on and to get all the updates (including flash)!! i will ofc be in need of flesh to practice on 🌞 so much gratitude for the people who have already offered their skin and soooo honored that people actually want my art permanently on your bodies!!! i can’t wait!!!

thx to @maya_rait for the fun photos hehe

film came back from bishop (plus a couple bonus ones from briefly being in red rock!)

deeply missing the bliss of baking in the desert sun, running around the buttermilks and tablelands like a kid in a candy shop, and climbing boulders in one of my favorite landscapes — even if it meant being stupidly dehydrated, getting my third-ever sunburn, and ending the trip with a mystery finger injury (speculating a partially torn A1 pulley - if anyone has insight on this plz slide into my dms because i’m struggling to find info on A1s!)

a reflection on being 29:

this year was a year of recalibrating my goals, of nurturing connection, of community care, of setting boundaries and learning how to fulfill my own needs. i never expected to leave 29 in the way that i have, and honestly… i’m scared of what 30 has to bring. 30 is marking a huge period of transition in many aspects of my life (too much if you ask me rn lol) and while change is hard and destabilizing, i know that it will help me build a stronger foundation. i hope all u friends who are in or past your 30s are right about how great being in your 30s is 😮‍💨

i know i never shut up about climbing but this silly sport has taught me so much, especially in the past year - of following my gut, trusting my instincts, listening to my body and its needs, and processing fear and feeling strong enough to move past it. this has applied to so much more than just climbing and i’m soooo grateful to be surrounded by people who support me and empower me.

i’m not really sure where i’m going with this lol but i’ve never believed in shit like mercury in retrograde and saturn in aries and year of the fire horse and whatever the fuck else, but it’s all pointed towards what 30 is shaping out to be. so here’s to 30, i guess 🤪 if you have any advice for this new decade PLEASE i will take any morsel

help us keep a neighbor housed and fed! they are taking care of a two-year-old and three-month-old and are running out of money after sheltering in place for two months and not being able to work.

update (3/2): the family has shared that their abuelita has passed away and had to use a large portion of these funds to cover her burial costs. they are struggling to make ends meet after over three months of sheltering in place and not being able to work. anything helps!

please donate, share, and call/email Governor Walz to issue an immediate eviction moratorium!

Venmo: persimmonseed
Goal: $4545/$5000 (as of 4/30)

fun shots from boulderfest by @rodel.querubin including a snippet of me cackling on the second boulder when my brain short circuited and had no idea what to do 🤠 felt the nerves of climbing under a spotlight much more than last year, but still soooo much fun and so grateful i was able to compete again! this year massively exposed my weaknesses with slab and beefy underclings 🥲 planning to take a big rest from indoor climbing before getting back into training later this fall, and maybe i’ll finally prioritize improving my weaknesses???

if y’all know any strong non-binary climbers in the midwest, send em our way for the next boulderfest — we barely made the cutoff for both this year and last year to make this category happen 🥺👉🏽👈🏽

a wild gie appeared!! thanks for the pics friends :’)

@cjoy_climb planted the idea of coming out to squamish earlier this year — i wanted to go soooo bad, but i struggled to find someone to make the long, 30 hour drive from minneapolis with me. i questioned if i would have fun planning a big road trip by myself, living out of my car for an extended period of time, and being in squamish with no real plan or agenda. while i’ve taken a couple solo trips out to bishop and the red earlier this year to work for @heyflashfoxy climbing festivals, this felt like the first trip i’ve taken that was solely for me, on my own timeline, and to just focus on climbing and having fun.

i showed up with no hopes and dreams about climbing anything in particular and no goals on what i wanted to accomplish — and i’m soooo glad i did that. my previous climbing trips were shaped by my disappointment of not ticking off certain climbs, certain grades, and climbing as much as i could even when i didn’t want to, just so i would make the “most” out of my visit. for the next two years, climbing outside felt scary, overly self-critical, and no longer fun. i made the most out of squamish by giggling in the woods, rolling around in moss, making new friends, and trying boulders only when they inspired me, even if it meant i rarely made it to the top.

already excited for the next time i’m in squamish, and my next climbing trips generally — i think by then i’ll be ready to set some goals on what to climb and still be gentle with myself 🥹🫰🏽 next time i’ll be sure to stay in BC for more than just 9 days!

a smear, a smudge, an edge on a grain
embracing friction with no holds to remain
toes placed precise, pressure keen and small
with steady weight, i beg: plz don’t fall

the angle leans, a blank face, no obvious grip
a trusting dance with fear to slip
a slow ascendance. remember to breathe
a humbling experience to rely on technique

(swipe for an accurate representation about how i really feel about slab 😩)

i got to take more photos for another flash foxy climbing festival, this time in the red river gorge 🥰 i managed to squeeze in a couple days of climbing before the festival started — it’s been maybe two years since i’ve climbed ropes outside due to some whack mental game, but i could not think of a better place with better people to get my stoke back.

so so so grateful to be in this space that @heyflashfoxy brings together: curious, patient, and silly folks who are so excited to pour so much into building a better climbing community, and soooo much fun to have the opportunity to try to capture a bit of the magic on camera. thanks again for throwing together a fabulous weekend and for having me on board again @catlikeacat!

some highlights:
@walkergenevive on ro shampo while i remind myself how to ascend a static like + dial in my camera settings so i actually know what i’m doing once the festival starts lol
• followed @maizalimarock and @abbe_yonce around for their intro to outdoor climbing and intro to multipitch clinics
• pics of @cjoy_climb on ro shampo that @ninjatengu actually took but i’m including them anyway hehe
• building trails for new crags!
@greta.staggs with the wag bags! carry out your poop plz
• serious entertainment provided by cicadas and their exoskeletons

just a few highlights from my trip to the land of flowing water 🌊

feeling an immense amount of gratitude to have had the opportunity to recreate on this land and the trust from @catlikeacat and the team at @heyflashfoxy to have me as a photographer — this was my first time being hired as a photographer, and to be able to do this for a climbing festival that celebrates trans people, gender expansive folks, and women was so, so special.

connecting with people, especially bipoc and/or queer folks, is why i got into this sport and has always been the root of why i love rock climbing. as someone who is deeply competitive and self critical, i do tend lose sight of that sometimes — but this trip has reminded me to take a step back and remember what’s truly important: not to climb hard, but to appreciate and take care of the land with likeminded people.

photography is a newer and more unfamiliar medium for me! there’s a lot i wish i approached differently with how i photographed this festival, mixed in with some self doubt, imposter syndrome, and anxiety about shoving my camera in people’s faces, but i still had sooooo much fun and can’t wait to keep learning and take even more sick pics of you fools 👹 thanks for coming to my ted talk!!!

snippets include:
• running around the happy boulders while being pelted by wind and sand
• tagging along with @ashimashiraishi to learn about 岩道 iwa-dō as a practice to meditate and connect with the earth (you can learn too!! more info is linked on ashima’s page), reading about the geological history of the tablelands, and writing a group poem at the end of our day (only one happy tear was shed)
• hiking up to the druid stones with @sheneenagins — a stunnnnning boulder field that is absolutely worth the long and steep approach
• the longest arm wrestling match i’ve ever witnessed
• restoring the land and planting native plants in the buttermilks with @bpt.emo @bpt_cosa @bishopclimbingrangers and @arcteryx
@ferntastic’s pup who stole the hearts of many

if you see someone who isn’t tagged, let me know!

photography is a newer and more unfamiliar medium for me! there’s a lot i wish i approached differently with how i photographed this festival, mixed in with some self doubt, imposter syndrome, and anxiety about shoving my camera in people’s faces, but i still had sooooo much fun and can’t wait to keep learning and take even more sick pics of you fools 👹 thanks for coming to my ted talk!!!
