This one should be an interesting surfing experience. It’s 12 feet of coastal redwood turned into a 1920s era surfboard as used in Southern California. Two other shapers had found the piece and started some work toward this, but passed on before it was built. It came to me to shape and ride. I’ve been drying the wood for 8 years. It’s all done now.
Let’s see....printed on 8.5x11 paper, this piece of sheet music measures more than 6 feet long. That’s going to be a little hard to handle on one music stand. The appropriately named tune “Width of the World” by San Diego’s own Peter Sprague.
I never grew up with a Bridgeport mill, since those tend to live in the metalworking world. Some years ago I got one-1963 vintage 12” knee step pulley drive- to have here in the barn. And I’ve come to the opinion that every home should house one of these. Because there’s always a place for a tool that can make other tools.
There’s something charming about a vehicle so simple you can do some creative re-engineering and adopt a transmission that wasn’t fully developed until a decade later. Time for this old flywheel to go. 1956 F100
