Q: What happens if you never change the transmission fluid?🤔
We get the answer to this latest “That’s Not a Stupid Question from the experts at @amsoilinc.
A: Transmission fluid – in both automatic and manual transmissions – lubricates moving parts, cools the transmission and facilitates smooth gear shifts. Over time, however, this fluid degrades and loses its effectiveness due to heat, friction and contamination. Neglecting to change your transmission fluid can lead to serious mechanical issues and costly repairs over time.
The primary concern from never changing your transmission fluid is premature wear and contamination. As fluid ages, it can become less viscous and accumulates contaminates like metal shavings, clutch material and other debris.
These contaminates reduce the fluid’s ability to lubricate and protect gears, bearings and seals, accelerating component degradation. This lack of viscosity and contamination can lead to excessive wear, poor shift quality and eventually failure.
Contamination isn’t all there is to be concerned about. Old or degraded fluid loses its thermal stability, rendering it more susceptible to thermal shear where it thins as temperatures rise resulting in a loss in pressure.
Excessive heat can cause seals to harden and crack, leading to leaks and pressure loss. In automatic transmissions, overheating can also damage the valve body and torque converter, resulting in erratic shifting or complete transmission failure.
Slipping gears and delayed shifting are a result of contaminated or otherwise depleted fluid. Automatic transmissions rely on fluid pressure for engaging gears. Contaminated or low-quality/depleted fluid can cause inconsistent hydraulic pressure, leading to hesitation, slipping, or harsh gear changes.
