🎊 The Art Encounters Foundation and the French Institute of Romania in Timisoara are pleased to invite you to the opening of the exhibition 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐲 𝐌𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐚 𝐄𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝, which will take place on 𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟔𝐭𝐡, 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟔𝐩𝐦, 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧 (Liberty Square 5).

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐡𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐀𝐦𝐢 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐤, continues the research initiated by Mimosa Echard in 2019 at Villa Kujoyama (Kyoto), Japan, on the idea of memory in myxomycetes, unicellular organisms halfway between the animal, plant and fungi kingdoms. The exhibition is based on her first video game, created in collaboration with developer Andréa Sardin and artist Aodhan Madden. It invites you to explore the cavities of an organism in perpetual transformation, inspired by the life cycle of the myxomycete. A monumental patchwork suspended at the heart of the exhibition reveals an audiovisual montage based on the video game.

The work’s constituent fabrics come from a multitude of sources, fusing plant and industrial materials found online or in the artist’s studio. Mimosa Echard stages a psychedelic environment, oscillating between states of latency and bursts of vitality. The video, projected against a patchwork, is inspired by #iamonlysleeping - a widespread practice on the live streaming platform Twitch, in which people expose themselves while sleeping and consent to their surveillance.
The installation is accompanied by a pop-experimental soundscape created by Aodhan Madden and Yvan Etienne, consisting of field recordings and various voices, including that of Charli XCX. Mimosa Echard, winner of the Marcel Duchamp Price in 2022, plunges us into a hybrid universe which we can continue to explore beyond the exhibition, by downloading the video game Sporal available free of charge (www.sporal.net)

ℹ️ The exhibition can be visited until the 14th of July, Thursday – Friday: 4pm – 8pm and Saturday – Sunday 2pm – 8pm. The access is free.

Pusha Petrov (un)stich @jeczagallery @parisphoto She managed to be accepted on the intimacy of African hairdressing salons in Paris and questioned their multiple social and community functions as testimony of collective affirmation. To reach the final shape the mats and braids are attached with white thread that are removed afterwards. For the color threads we see appear she asked other artists to choose a color and to intervene each in their turn. The artist left them as it is, as a personal analytic input.
Pišćir is a peculiar prop, an enriched headdress. With a history of almost a century and a half, composed of meticulously embroidered and hand-woven elements, with gold thread inserts, the traditional female costume is entirely designed and created by the women of the family to be part of the dowry and supposed to be inherited from generation to generation.
The powerfully colored and shiny headdress acts as a heavy golden helmet to wear.

After the fall of communism, Lenin’s statue was torn down from its pedestal in Free Press Square in Bucharest. Rumours had it that the bronze in the statue was itself reused from a monument of King Ferdinand of Romania, in its turn destroyed and melted by communists.
Before ‘89, the political power in Romania used art and artists for propaganda purposes. Growing up later, I’ve always had the feeling of discharge from this weight, as if my generation was no longer limited in its will to create freely. On the other hand, I’ve also been haunted by the feeling that we were lost and adrift. Being employed by the power generated a feeling of being useful and filled the empty space left by anguishing questions such as: What is our meaning in society? What is it for?
Having this in mind, I kept pondering on how I would approach Lenin today – no prerequisites, no external factors, just me in my studio in Cluj. How absurd is it to exhibit Lenin’s statue in public today?
I came up with a strategy to supersize it: I modelled in clay, as classically as possible, a small copy of Boris Caragea’s Lenin in Bucharest, based on reproductions of the destroyed statue. Through the casting process, small negative moulds have resulted, sized 10 to 20 cm. Again, through the modelling process by hand I enlarged 1:6 times scale. The result of the combined final pieces is intended to produce a monumental Lenin sculpture, close in its size to the original, through a formalist, abstract process. By copying the curves and volumes of the moulds, the transition from positive to negative results in a double deformation, both by reproduction as well as by oversizing. A parallel with history is therefore created – when a good idea is amplified in a distorted way, it becomes an absurd monstrosity. Ciprian Mureșan

Formally, the works draw on Constantin Brancusi’s The Newborn. Version I, 1920
