My brother wrote a beautiful obituary for her
Mary Estelle Calhoun, 69, of Syracuse, NY , passed away on November 6, 2023 in Vancouver, WA after battling cancer on and off for over two decades.
Mary was born on December 19, 1953 to Carmen DiMura and Victoria Ramaglino of Syracuse, NY.
She was a dedicated educator who worked tirelessly for her students over a 40 year career. The only thing that rivaled the attentiveness to her responsibilities as an educator was her dedication as a parent, spouse, and grandmother.
In 1972 she met Allen Calhoun while they were working at the restaurant Chef Italia in Syracuse. After being drawn in by her unending enthusiasm and a “laugh that you wanted to work hard to hear”, Allen proposed and they were married in 1974.
Together, they raised two children: Michael (42, Vancouver, WA) and Allison (36, Los Angeles, CA). As a family, they had far more good times than bad. For 42 years she would drop everything to help her children with math homework, trips to the hospital, unsolicited opinions (despite their protests), and an ear to listen to the results of the unfollowed opinions.
She was an exemplar of a caring and compassionate person. As a friend, she would ask for nothing while giving you her entire self. As a parent, she would pave a road with every fiber of her being if she thought it gave her children an easier path. As a person, the world is a less better place without her living in it.
She is survived by her husband Allen; her children Allison and Michael (and his partner Lynnsay); her grandchildren Miles and Arlo; her sister Marjorie McNeil; and a painfully large collection of Italian cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers or memorial gifts the family is asking that donations be made in her name to the American Cancer Society.
