A library nook that feels like a speakeasy. That’s what @nataliebradburnstudio and @salad_days__ carved out of a previously unremarkable corner of this Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington townhouse, just one of the bold moves made across all three levels. This issue I’ve been noticing a mood shift, a confidence in the way people are asserting who they are at home, and this renovation is a perfect expression of it. It’s our April/May cover, and the rest of the house is just as good. Pick up the new issue to see the full picture — on shelves now, just in time for some long weekend reading.

When the art collection shapes the architecture, something interesting happens. Interviewing Bridget and Mark Heginbotham for our current issue, one of the things I discovered was how building from scratch with @edwardswhitearchitects gave Bridget the chance to apply a collector’s instinct to interiors — falling for something, committing to it, and letting everything else follow. The powder room palette drawn from the Ganni showroom in Copenhagen. Murano pendants that spent three weeks in Customs… Check out the story for more of their unique finds. Online now via @homestylemag.

Straight past the shops and into a sweat session. I’ll take alpine air over the main strip any day, and with a few hours to kill in Queenstown, @watershedsaunas delivered. That hot/cold combo always makes for good conversation, and despite being right in the centre of things downtown, the lake views here transported us. Back along the waterfront, @queenstownwharfbar was the perfect spot to refuel — second floor, above the crowds, fresh flavours made for sharing. Add both to your list.

There’s a kind of luxury I’ve been thinking about recently, and it has nothing to do with excess. It came into focus in conversation with Raimana Jones of @atelierjonesdesign, when I interviewed him about the Waterview kitchen on our new cover: the value of designing for the home in front of you. Once that idea landed as a theme, it became a thread that connected every project we selected for our June/July issue. Spaces made to matter. Copies have hit the shelves this week, so go get one, it’s a goodie.

Let’s be real, a first home on a tight budget is a harder brief than an open one. If anything, creativity that pushes up against the edges of what’s achievable can be the most satisfying kind.

After honing her eye at Fearon Hay and Herbst Architects, Emily Stephens @by__emily_ took that on at home. Alongside partner Sam Owles, she shaped a 105m² house around a steep North Shore site in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland, drawing every line herself while the two of them became parents. High ceilings pull the bush view in, reeded glass borrows light between rooms, and a curved banquette salvaged from Clooney finds a second life in the dining zone. Read the feature by @clairemccall10 from our April/May issue online now, with more clever projects landing in the next @homestylemag, on sale Monday.

My guest on episode two of Inside Stories is Buster Caldwell, founder of @wonder.group_ . I’ve wanted to have this conversation for a while as Buster’s honesty about how he works is something I’ve always appreciated. I met him at his apartment and we headed out in the Lexus RX on his morning commute across Tāmaki Makaurau. Wonder Group is approaching a decade working across hospitality, retail and workplace interiors and Buster is an open book about what it actually takes to run a design business. If you’re building something creative, this one’s for you.

Listen now, link in bio. Made in partnership with @lexus_newzealand.

“Safe is not always joyful.” Sage words from Sammy-Rose Scapens of @homewerk_nz, and a good line to carry into any rooms you’re rethinking. She and partner Oliver Starr design compact cabins where every hue is doing serious work, and talking to her about it for our April/May issue left me thinking about how colour can be an activator for a good mood at home. We caught up as part of a series with @aaltopaint in @homestylemag, and her thoughts on how paint shapes the way a space feels are online now via the link in bio.

No secret that I’m into forest bathing, so this ensuite meets meadow situation caught my eye when we were putting together the April/May issue of @homestylemag. An outdoor bath leading off the main bedroom, wild plantings growing to the pool coping, a wind garden of carex and miscanthus on the western banks. Designer Jenny Walter, landscape designer @zoecaraficels and builder @createconstruct.co.nz have created a home where inside and outside really work as one. Story by @clairemccall10, in print and online now.

Last year we started a new family tradition, getting out on the @docgovtnz Great Walks together. To celebrate Mum’s 70th this year, it felt like the right moment to tick off the Milford Track. Getting through the booking process was a mission in itself, but worth every refresh. Plenty of conversations about layers were had. As it turned out, we couldn’t have asked for better autumn conditions — crisp, bluebird days and with Ultimate Hikes wrapped up for the season at the beginning of April, we walked it with half the usual number of people on the track. Highly recommend. Milford bookings open tomorrow, and if you manage to nab a spot, happy to answer DMs on logistics. 🏔️

For episode one of @insidestorieswithalice I caught up with Whakaawa and Josh Te Kani of @noablanketco. While drawing on toi Māori heritage, they’re building something entirely of this moment, and their contribution to contemporary design in Aotearoa is a conversation that deserves to be lifted off the page. We drove across Tāmaki Makaurau in the @lexus_newzealand RX. Swipe for a few moments that stayed with me, and listen now at the link in bio.

New perspectives on a favourite view. The Sugarloaf Transmission Building finally opened its doors this weekend — a rare chance to see inside. Not pictured: the inner workings which were off bounds for photos.

The @openchch team do an amazing job of making architecture accessible for everyone in the city. Thanks @blessed_n_cursed for inviting me to speak last night too. It was a privilege to be part of such a great line up!

Ready for another weekend of archi-tours in Ōtautahi for OPEN CHCH.

On Saturday night, I’ll be joining the ‘Style-ish’ line-up — 20 slides, 20 seconds each — sharing perspectives on what ‘style’ in architecture means in a city shaped by history, loss and rebuild.

There’s plenty to draw from, and rigorous banter will likely ensue. My take: The View from Up Here starts at our place.

Come join us at Altiora, The Arts Centre, 6–8pm. Tix $20 at @openchch.
