I’m so excited to announce that I’ve been selected for @new_contemporaries this year! Being able to finally share this after months of knowing is such a thrill and an honour 🪬
I have endless thanks to give the judges @louise___giovanelli @pioabad and @theofficialgracendiritu for selecting my work, and the incredible New Contemporaries team for your support @kiera_blakey @seamusmccormack, Rosie, Sophie, and Ella.
I have always seen the accolade and prestige of New Contemporaries as something I’d love to achieve one day, and I cannot now put into words how incredible it is to be a part of this with so many talented and exciting artists. I am beyond honoured to have been chosen as part of the 2025 cohort.
ألف مبروك Alf Mabrouk to my fellow artists who will also be showing in the exhibitions, starting with @southlondongallery for the private view on 29 January 2026, and later in the spring at @mimauseful.
Exhibition Dates:
South London Gallery: 30 January – 12 April 2026
MIMA, Middlesbrough: 8 May – 16 August 2026

What an incredible honour it was to venture into my first ever live spoken word work as part of NC Live for @new_contemporaries a few weeks ago!
The piece - When I Think About Libya / عندما أفكر في ليبيا
2024
Is a spoken word piece by myself developed by translating my colloquial Libyan Arabic into English and back, serving as a testament to memory and identity through language and culture as it fades and changes after displacement.
With particular gratitude to:
At South London Gallery: @sarah___allen, @leilaarenou and eleanorcostello_ and the incredible AV tech Ben.
And to @sophie_bownes at @new_contemporaries or looking after us all - what a joy it was to do this alongside the incredibly talented @makikoharris @christopher_steenson and @willpham_ and The VLC Band for what was an incredible afternoon. Thank you everyone who attended and/or supported 🧿

🌞 Sunshine and concrete. A good delivery day! 🌞
David Stupple of @cowsikeworkshop designed these incredible plinths as part of FORGED, one of which will be the base for @alia_studio_’s public sculpture What I Remember About Libya.
Alia’s sculpture is supported by the Henry Moore Foundation, and co-funded through FORGED, an initiative led by Middlesbrough Art Week and Navigator North, with backing from the Tees Valley Combined Authority.
What I Remember About Libya will be installed in The Auxiliary community garden in spring.

hello / أهلاً
As I have a few new followers here, I wanted to say hello and reintroduce myself, as well let you know where you can see and experience my artwork.
My name is Alia, and I am a Libyan-British artist based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK. I work across installation, sculpture, and spoken word to express my experience of and themes of displacement, oral histories, nationalism and power structures.
I am part of this years’ @new_contemporaries with work currently at @southlondongallery until the 12th April. The exhibition will then move to @mimauseful from 8 May – 16 August 2026.
I am also working on an exciting commission with @theauxiliaryprojectspace , where I was awarded a Henry Moore Foundation Grant to produce a new public sculpture as part of the FORGED project, which will go on display as part of Common Ground Micro-Farm this spring.
You’ll also see new things from myself in 2027 with @newbridgeproject as part of Co-Act, a programme I was selected to work on with artist Jakarin Shah, developing collaborative and socially engaged ways of working with a focus on food stories, conversation and bringing together local diasporic communities.
Thank you for joining me on this journey 🧿 images 1-2 by @racheldeakin_ , images 3 and 4: New Contemporaries at South London Gallery, 2026. Photo: Oli Cowling
