May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW), It is a day to remember and honor the mothers, sisters, daughters, aunties, and other family members stolen from us through violence. It is also a day to recommit ourselves to ending the violence against Native women and girls. Continue the call for action to end the MMIW crisis. Alaska continues to be one of the most dangerous states for violence against Indigenous Women and has the 4th highest MMIP cases nationally. WE MUST END THIS CRISIS!

May 5th was officially designated as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in 2017 in memory of Hanna Harris, a Northern Cheyenne tribal member who was murdered in 2013 on her 21st birthday. This date has grown into a week of national action to honor the lives of those lost, support survivors and families, and unite our efforts to end this crisis.

- The statistics regarding MMIW in Alaska are deeply troubling: Alaska has one of the highest rates of missing and murdered Indigenous women in the nation, with Indigenous women representing nearly 40% of all reported missing persons cases while making up only 16% of the state's population.
- Alaska Native women experience violence at a rate 10 times higher than the national average.
- In rural Alaska, the murder rate for Alaska Native women is up to 10 times higher than the national average for all women.
- Limited law enforcement presence in remote communities means that many Alaska Native villages have little to no immediate protection or response capability.

If you have any questions please email tribaljustice@aknwrc.org

April 29th is Denim Day. There is never an excuse for rape. Help us to honor survivors. Here are a few ways you can get involved:
- Anytime you hear victim blaming, call it out.
- Post a selfie or a group photo in your denim on social media, captioned with why you wear denim, please tag #aknwrc
- Consider donating to a local organization providing supportive services to survivors

Victim-blaming protects the person causing the harm. Blaming survivors for what happened to them is harmful and never acceptable. Survivors should never be blamed for an abuser's behavior. Below are examples of victim-blaming and what you can say instead.
- Boys will be boys.
- What were you wearing?
- Why didn’t you report them to the police?
- Why didn’t you fight back?
- Were you drinking?
- Are you sure that's what happened?

Examples of what to say instead of victim-blaming are
- No one had the right to do that to you.
- Placing clothing in a bag can preserve evidence if you choose to report later.
- Would you like to seek emergency services?
- I hear you, and I believe you.
- It’s not your fault.
- Can I get you anything?
- Do you want to talk to anyone or just sit together?

Reminder: Wednesday, April 29th, is Denim Day.

Denim Day was founded to promote recognition that what a person is wearing is never a justification for sexual assault. It began after a judge told a woman that her tight jeans meant she helped her attacker take them off, thereby making the act consensual. Show your support to survivors and raise awareness about the dangers of victim-blaming by wearing denim on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
