On the last lap around the sun, I found myself expanding inward and outward in ways and directions I hadn’t considered before. And on a quest to understand what it means to connect, in ways only sentient beings can. H is in motion, too, in her own timing. Standing at a continental divide, the fault line palpable, she’s ready to set sail as her own new continent, breaking apart from the mother, of mine. Thank you friends near and far, for making this a road better traveled. Starting a new lap around the sun today. #capricornsun #librarising #hokkaido #tokyo #fiji

Connection. Building things.

Whether it’s loving what you do at work
or finding someone to build a life with,
there’s a complexity to building
and a heartache when it comes tumbling down.

That’s not drama.
That’s just life.

But before dusting off,
before starting again,
before rushing to solutions

Pause.
There’s wisdom there.

Like the top of an inhale
or the bottom of an exhale.

We barely notice it, but without it,
we’d keep whirring around, breathless.

I’m writing again.
Afterimage is about the no longer and not yet
the sensations and messages we feel in our bodies
when we cross into the unknown.

The first post of the new season is live.

Until a couple of years ago, my school’s entrance exam included a drawing of a bicycle in graphite. Lacking the confidence (and patience) to complete a technical drawing to my liking, I submitted a drawing of a dress with a bicycle motif— and got in😂

Since then, I’ll stop in front of any bike in situ that makes me feel like I might be able to draw it. I’ll admire and thank it before I go about my merry way. While I don’t have any drawings to submit now, I’m glad to be reminded there are always so many ways to cook an egg.

The earth keeps turning and makes its way around the sun, without any effort or will on my part. What that journey feels like is thanks to you: the people and places that jostle and awaken the beauty, joy, connection, laughter, challenge, provocation, discovery, desire, and curiosity in me and around me. I am, because you are. Keep being you. Don’t hold back. It shapes me and how I experience the world. Thank you for the birthday wishes. Here’s to the next 362 days.

It’s been a doozy of a month. While I’m selective about astrology (selective in believing!), I can’t ignore my life’s biggest disruptions align with major eclipses. This month is no exception.

Affirmations are helpful during challenging times, eclipses or no eclipses! They can activate the Reticular Activating System, the brain’s filter that shapes our perception and helps us focus on what truly matters. Here, I’ll share affirmations for safety, grounding, and belonging, paired with movements that activate corresponding energy centers in our body. Train the brain and body to clear stagnant energy and give yourself what you need today.

I know safety is a privilege not everyone has. Belonging also depends on how we include others and those who experience othering. If you know this to be true, extend the questions to those around you by asking: “What do you need to feel safe, included, and connected?”

Get ready with me. From the inside.

1st thought: how texture catches light
2nd: how much time
3rd: how many people, lives, stories have trodden on these stones
And how many more to come.

After a morning of snowboarding, coffee, and reflection on this past month and year, I brought home a shimenawa wreath for the New Year. Driving in snow country feels a bit mesmerizing, trying to differentiate the shades of white to know where the road begins and the snowbank ends. It’s warm at -2℃, and the car smells surprisingly like a forest, given there’s so little pine in the wreath. The whole world, for a moment, was contained in my car — then in a second, it vanished into the icy air when I opened the car door. What a difference a year makes. #大晦日 #quietnewyearseve #annupuri #rankoshi #hokkaido

Coming out of hibernation.
Moving from one season to the next in the span of a long week, from snow to crocuses shooting up from bare earth. The change heightened by a quick weekend in Tokyo, where the city felt bright to Hokkaido’s still monochromatic shades of snow.

It’s been over a year since I’ve posted here. In the time I’ve been away, I’ve been thinking about what I’m posting and why. I haven’t entirely reached a conclusion, but if you’re curious about my experiment to write in public, come watch me think aloud on my newsletter. I’ve meant for it to be a digital postcard, short and sweet. For the moment, there’s more to share than I imagined.Maybe it’s because I haven’t shared anything in over a year. The first installment went out last week. I talk about writing and The Art of the Striptease, seeing with feet, and using sad music to elevate the most boring of tasks— in my case, working out.Hope to see you, second one goes out tomorrow.
