I loved capturing a day in the life at @petermichaelwinery alongside the ever-talented @mitchelloverton. Filmmaking has been such a natural and fun extension of photography for me. Motion opens up sensory details in storytelling that a still image struggles to convey.

In the last moments of a sunset that big ball of light starts dropping faster and faster like it’s being pulled into the horizon. It was in that frenzied final minute of light that I stopped running around the rows and climbed onto the top of my jeep to see above the vines which even after pruning are well overhead in late summer. I used a fill flash to give definition to the foreground and put a 90mm lens hood (long) on a 28mm lens (wide) to create this portal effect where the sun catches the lip of the metal hood and glows in the bottom right corner of the frame offsetting the aforementioned light ball in the top left corner. I like it. You could even say I’m proud of it. The chase is fun on its own, but it’s even better when you’re happy with what you catch.

My uncle said “nah, I’ve already been, why would I go back? It’s not like the river has changed.” But rivers are CONSTANTLY changing(!!!), perpetually rewriting their shores

and maybe I’m just grasping at depth while trying to post a pretty picture, whilst stuck on this platform trying to stay relevant as a photographer... but you know what’s a balm to being chronically stuck on our devices and in our egos? Thinking deeply about a river, and where it starts and ends, and how many lives it touches on its path, and if the river itself is thriving or just surviving and where you might fit in to all that

AND what’s even better than thinking about that river, is going to it... so yes, uncle, revisit that river. You’ve both been changing.
