I’m not even sure how to begin to put into words what this weekend meant not only for myself, but Asians all over the world. A moment that has been years in the making, a journey filled with countless hours of hard work, rehearsals, blood, sweat & tears. Truly the best way to celebrate #AsianHeritageMonth at The Juno Awards!
To not only manage, but also choreograph one of the biggest upcoming South Asian artists of our generation has been a blessing and nothing short of God’s plan. @tesherrrr thank you for making these last two years and the pandemic one of the best career pivots of my life. To see you grow, take on these stages and share a vision with you for the South Asian sonic takeover has been an honor. To choreograph to your music and channel my creative energy makes my 13-year old self so happy. The little girl is dreaming her biggest dreams. There is nobody I’d rather be on this journey with, thank you for trusting me with your biggest career milestones.
@simuliu, it was an absolute pleasure sharing our culture with you and teaching you Bhangra. Seeing you represent and accept us with such passion was a highlight. You are a testament of ambition & perseverance, grateful to have shared a stage with you.
To all my dancers, your hard work and determination will never go unnoticed. Thank you for showing up to every rehearsal always ready to go! You were a choreographer’s dream. @samiya_hassan, kudos to you for being on top of your game and so helpful with keeping things moving over the weekend. @sarowarrr, you did the best job capturing all these moments so beautifully and thank you for just being there at all times!
From ballet recitals and local Bollywood shows to choreographing on National award stages, I realize now that each one was a lesson training me for this big moment. Props to my ballet teachers, Shiamak instructors and @nyunasha.
The team at @thejunoawards CARAS @umusic @insight.productions @tiktok_canada and all our partners, it takes a village to bring a performance like this to life and #TeamTesher is incredibly thankful to be able to celebrate this moment with you all.
We’re only just getting started, the best is yet to come 👀

This was an incredibly bittersweet moment hearing Naatu Naatu on the Oscars stage. @sipligunjrahul and @kaalabhairava7 were incredible!
But - Are you kidding me? We’re going to now accept Brown-passing and lazy casting as an excuse when this talent exists in the South Asian and Indian community?
Let’s put it this way - if this was a movie from any other global majority culture, say the Oscars hired 2 dark-skinned Brown people to pass as Black, 2 Brown people from East India (Assam/Odisha/Sikkim) to pass as East-Asian (Chinese, Japanese etc.) or 2 North Indians to pass as Latinx folk - there would be absolute outrage.
We as South Asians must protect our culture and speak up when shit happens just like the other communities do!
As dope as it was to see Naatu performed at the Oscars, a Lebanese-Canadian, Billy and I’m not sure about Jason Glover but we can take a guess being cast as the leads was extremely out of pocket. Again however, no blame should fall on the dancers as it is the responsibility of the directors/producers and those creatively conceptualizing the piece.
