Today we're highlighting the power of inclusive team sport and the vital role Sport Welfare Officers play in helping clubs create safe, positive and welcoming environments for participants.

Through its inclusive hockey sessions, @birminghamhockeyclub1932 has created a space where young people feel supported, valued and part of a community.

Working closely with the club, @sportbirmingham's Sport Welfare Officer, Chris Timmins, has helped strengthen welfare and safeguarding approaches, providing guidance and support to ensure every participant has a positive experience.

This campaign celebrates the incredible work happening across grassroots sport to build environments where everyone feels like they belong.

Creating safer, more welcoming sports environments takes partnership, trust, and the right support.

Our Strategic Lead for Welfare, Laura Middleton, reflects on the launch of the Sport Welfare in Action - Together for Safer Sport campaign and the incredible work that Sport Welfare Officers are doing across England.

Since October 2024, Sport Welfare Officers have supported more than 5,000 clubs with free expert advice, training, and guidance, helping volunteers and organisations feel more confident in safeguarding and welfare.

With more than 60 Sport Welfare Officers working across 42 Active Partnerships, this network is helping clubs build positive welfare cultures where everyone can feel safe, supported, and able to belong in sport.

Read the full blog via our website to learn more about the power of collaboration to achieve culture change.

As part of our Sport Welfare in Action campaign, we’re shining a light on the crucial collaboration between the Sport Welfare Officer Network and National Governing Bodies, working closely together to help grassroots clubs create safe, welcoming and positive environments for everyone involved in sport.

Working alongside @britishgymnasticsofficial, James Ballard from Active Dorset played a key role in supporting Active Gymnastics Club to open its doors.

James helped the club establish a strong welfare culture from day one, through one-to-one support, safeguarding guidance, training, and supporting the recruitment of a Club Welfare Officer.

Our campaign highlights how collaboration and welfare support can make a real difference to clubs, volunteers, parents and participants, ensuring everyone can enjoy positive experiences in sport.

As part of #SportWelfareInAction we visited Diss Otters Swimming Club with Active Norfolk.

The Sport Welfare Officer Network, with its 63 officers, is helping grassroots clubs across England create safer, more welcoming and more positive environments for everyone involved in sport.

At Diss Otters, the support of Active Norfolk’s Sport Welfare Officer, Anita Stewart, has strengthened the club’s welfare culture at every level, from coaches and committee members to parents and young swimmers.

Safeguarding and welfare support in grassroots sport is crucial as it helps create positive experiences for everyone.

Today, we've launched #SportWelfareInAction, a new national campaign celebrating the people and partnerships helping to make sport safer, more inclusive, and more positive for everyone.

The campaign recognises the important role volunteers, officers, National Governing Bodies, and local and national partners all play in creating positive club cultures, while reinforcing the support available to them through the Sport Welfare Officer Network.

Across England, Sport Welfare Officers are working behind the scenes with clubs, coaches, volunteers and organisations to strengthen safeguarding, improve welfare practices and support better experiences in sport and physical activity.

Through real stories and examples from across the network, Sport Welfare in Action will highlight the impact of this work in communities every day, illustrating how environments where children, young people, and adults can take part safely and confidently are being nurtured and created.

Read more about the campaign and the Sport Welfare Officer Network via the news link in our bio or directly via our website.

The latest Sport England (@officialsportengland) Active Lives Report is out, and we are so proud to see that Surrey remains England’s second most active county.

71% of our residents are active. This means they’re completing 150 minutes or more of physical activity per week.

But, this also means that 29% of our residents are not reaching the recommended activity levels set by England’s Chief Medical Officer.

So, our mission remains the same. To get all of Surrey’s residents moving and leading healthier, happier lives.

We are here to help remove barriers to entry to sport, address inequalities and create opportunities for movement in ways that work for you.

Together, we can get everyone in Surrey moving.

🙌Allow us to (re)introduce ourselves!🙌

Hello! If you have landed here, this is the home of Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire on Instagram. 📷

We are the local Active Partnership for the counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire, and we have been established as the strategic lead for movement, physical activity and sport, through funding from @officialsportengland. 👏

We are proud to form a network of 42 @active_partnerships across the country, striving to help our communities become more active and to tackle the inequalities and barriers in place that are preventing this form happening. 💓

Over the years, we have had many different iterations and focuses, previously being a more delivery based organisation. We have shifted over time to becoming a more strategic, intermediary organisation, with collaboration at its core. 🤝

We work with key strategic partners across the various systems in place (such as health, leisure, planning, sport and the voluntary sector) to ensure that movement, physical activity and sport can benefit our populations. ✅

With our knowhow, we can get the communities we serve moving and active, improving health and wellbeing, transforming lives and creating lasting change. 😀

Our vision is "everyone active for life", and as an ambitious organisation that wants to see physical activity equity and a healthier Herefordshire and Worcestershire, we are driven to make this happen. 👍

Learn more about us, how we can best serve you, and how we can collaborate by visiting our website via the link in our bio!

Professor Sir Michael Marmot, Director of the Institute of Health Equity spoke on why working in local places is important at the recent Active Partnerships Annual Leadership event.

"Working in a place based way, is working in partnership... and physical activity should be part of that."

At Sport England, we use a principle called Proportionate Universalism which comes from the Marmot Review, led by Professor Sir Michael Marmot in 2010, which explored health inequalities in England. This approach provides services to all but its scaled according to individual or community need, with higher investment where the barriers are greatest.

Health, movement and opportunity should belong to all of us.
