Sangam Labs is an ongoing cultural and community activation series that continues and expands the work of Sangam to forge strong relations between South Asian artists and leaders. The labs began in 2019 as a response to inequity in representation of South Asian marginal artists in the arts sector.

Through Sangam Labs we aim to build a healthy collaborative network that can help understand how power operates from an intersectional perspective. The labs create dialogue and connections to enable greater access to global mainstream platforms and stages for the ecosystem to benefit while also facilitating interesting collaborations in the future. This edition was a DBA-focused outlook towards Arts leadership so that we can represent more non-classical forms in the global mainstream.

One of the main anchors of FGR has always been music discovery. And on that note, considering this festival is a coming together of a lot of things FGR has been doing, the “Listening” section carries a lot of weight.

From our radio days, we’ve always found an interesting direction with these sessions when they come from non-musicians. And that’s how this section is curated (well, except for the host, @vidyuthsubraman).

We have selectors — Arya(@fourcrovvs) who's also part of our art gallery, Ashwin Mohan (@thatsmokeshell), and Vidyuth — along with Ashwin Arvind (@anotherashwin)and Mamaran (@_mamaran_ )doing listening sessions. More info on what everyone’s doing over the next few days.

Huffing, as I gather my thoughts in a room running with red thread attempting to connect vastness to sensibility. The push and pull of it all; immensely pleasurable. Each thread,just the right length that the minute I force it to make sense, it snaps before I do. But over time, I get more clarity as threads form fabric.

The picture is of a surfer taking off of a wave at the break of dawn in Mahabalipuram. Somehow, that's how I feel at this moment in time. Not thinking about sticking the landing but just enjoying the flight. Onwards to a new world maybe?

Like that bird over there, just flying, wherever its heart takes it. That’s the kind of freedom this last post is about, a human ache to belong with each other without borders. This campaign was built around that longing.

And call it coincidence, or a sign from the universe. This song played in the distance as we wrapped up our final set with @_mamaran_

When we told @_mamaran_ we would love to make our own beat for the Love drop, he roped in a close friend @arshaq_malik. A man of many musical talents, Arshaq is currently based in UK and has established himself as one of the most versatile hip-hop artists from the South Indian underground.

Mukesh imagined the beat as love between two instruments: the Thavil and the Nadaswaram. You rarely find one without the other. They lead, follow, and hold each other in step—a coup d’œil of what love feels like.

Arshaq took that vision, and casually handed back a banger ✨
