Curious when Opera & Ballet communities will shift our focus, attention, voices, and bodies towards the actions in:
Lebanon, Palestine, West Bank, Congo, Sudan, Yemen, Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, Syria, Ukraine, Israel and yes, the dangers running rampant in the United States
Can we channel our energy to address these injustices loudly and publicly? Because people in our community are being targeted.

This #ICE #sign could be seen every few blocks in #Chicago while I was visiting. It was a (weather) #warning, but let it also be a #prophecy.
All I want for Xmas is:
[ ] for I.C.E. to be disbanded in its current form, if not completely
[ ] for I.C.E. to stop terrorizing U.S. civilians — documented and undocumented
[ ] for families to be reunited
[ ] for the for-profit prison companies that forcibly hold our friends, families, co-workers, pregnant & new parents, and CHILDREN in their facilities to be held accountable for the human rights violations, and be shut down
That’s all I want for Xmas.

FESTIVAL FINALE |Tomorrow May 23!
🌼 What was the inspiration? 🌼In the May Festival’s over 150 year legacy, it wasn’t until 1956 that the festival became integrated through a performance of “Porgy & Bess” — with the wondrous American singers Leontyne Price and William Warfield.
Enclosed are two statements that will be projected above the Music Hall stage.
🌼 A poem by Langston Hughes about exploitation and appropriation. However, I do believe that the #Gershwins did EVERYTHING in their understanding to support and promote the artists who contributed to Porgy & Bess. (From their initial research, to their assurances and attempts to protect performers).
🌼 A statement by Katherine Garrison Chapin, who wrote the poetry for “Plain-Chant for America” with music by William Grant Still. This piece opens the second half of our finale concert. She was an anti-fascist — and (like so many of us) did not tolerate governments who would attempt to control political opposition through violence and fear. She asked for more of herself and others.
Simply can’t WAIT to join our community of choruses for this closing concert! ⭐️ Hope to see you there! 🌼

LES NOCE & CATULLI CARMINA | May 21
It’s HAPPENING❗️
This program is about people seeking to connect with each other — all in a riveting environment that surges with sounds made by a community gathering.
What was the inspiration? 🌺Well… I simply love “Les Noce”, and wanted to do it 😂 and Matthew Swanson (May Festival Director of Choruses) and I agreed that the element of dance had to be incorporated.
134 volunteer chorus members, 4 solo singers, 10 percussionists, 4 pianists, and 13 dancers — will fill the stage, and venture to embody one of Stravinsky’s most wild, iconic and canonic works. It’s a first for the May Festival. It sounds f@cking BRILLIANT(!) and slightly unhinged in every unapologetic, unbridled, unexpected, un-believably beautiful way!
What to pair with it? 🌺
Matthew asked, “Do you know Carmina, by Orff?” — “Uhhh Carmina Burana?? Yes… How does that fit here??” — “No… the other one scored for piano and percussion!” My head swiveled. 😲 I turned on a recording, listened for 11 seconds and laughed out loud with delight. It was an immediate yes for me. 😆 and without a doubt, we wanted this work fully choreographed as well.
It’s wonderful to have the Cincinnati Ballet 2 dancers on this stage for the first time, and it’s been difficult to find the last time the @cincinnatiballet has been a part of the May Festival… so if this is a first ⁉️ 🙌🏽
Simply cannot WAIT(!) for people to experience this raw & ritualistic music and movement, guided confidently by conductor Matthew Swanson and choreographer Yoshihisa Arai, in Music Hall.
It’s ALLLL happening.

PETITE MESSE SOLENNELLE by Rossini
🎵🌹Tomorrow Night | May 19! 🌹🎵
What was the inspiration? 🌹 I felt it was important to include another #Mass in its entirety during this May Festival. This is the first work of Rossini’s that I ever sang (publicly), this may be my most favorite work by #Rossini. 🤗🥰 The depth of the writing, the unique scoring for 2 pianos and harmonium, the lightness, and the unexpected quirky moments.Besides the arias and duets being immensely satisfying when shaped with unapologetic operatic drama!
I love how conductor Joe Miller also has a personal connection with this mass ANDCincinnati AND singing with the Vocal Arts Ensemble in years past. 🥹
Members of the Vocal Arts Ensemble sang “EL NIÑO: Nativity Reconsidered” with me a few years ago in Cincinnati. So can’t wait to hear them — and my beloved colleagues as soloists❗️ — in this EXTRAORDINARY Mass.

A DREAM DEFERRED: Langston Hughes in Song 🎵🌸TOMORROW! 🌸🎵
Every @mayfestivalcincy concert is inspired by the culture in #Cincinnati, however THIS program I wanted to remount for the May Festival, because of how the language of #LangstonHughes echoed across continents, and still resounds today.
Hope you can join us all on May 17th at Memorial Hall (right next to Music Hall — and first time the Festival has utilized this space 💜) This will be a celebratory afternoon of poetry and music, in a more intimate setting.

THE FAMILY LOUNGE! 🤗 This is another first for the May Festival, and I can’t wait to be there with my family TONIGHT!
Starting at 5pm (before the “Water Journey” concert), thru the May Festival Youth & Meridian Chorus performances, and the performance of Duke Ellington’s THE RIVER.
What was the inspiration? 🌸 I know how meaningful it has been to feel welcomed with my 3 year old kiddo into rehearsals and performances to hear live music, and that is something that should be open and available to all.So I asked the May Festival @mayfestivalcincy crew how many ways we can welcome families so they can feel relaxed, maybe take over a space, have snacks(!), and enjoy a concert all together?
The May Festival and Cincinnati Symphony are increasingly working to be a place that encourages the warmth of intergenerational exchanges, and this is now one of the ways they are implementing it!
Buy a $15 family ticket, or simply pay what you can afford ($1 is great!) No one will be turned away! ALL ARE WELCOME!

Wild cheers and applause for the entire ensemble at our Opening Night performance which concluded with a Hallelujah Chorus that brought the house down!
The 2026 May Festival is off to a glorious start!

What was the inspiration for this event? 🎵 The May Festival used to have parades and food gatherings to lead people into the hall in the early years! I wanted us to re-introduce that tradition!
Before the opening night @mayfestivalcincy concert on May 15, come early to the Washington Park — just outside of Music Hall!
Enjoy some food from @findlaymarket (you can even bring your own!), drinks and music outdoors, before gathering inside for AN ECLECTIC OPENING NIGHT!
