I first posted this online 9 year ago today. This photo was taken in my mom's house in Maine and I am wearing a red dress I found in her closet. I remember people were saying women should all call out of work that day and wear red in protest. This annoyed me at the time bc I didn't think everyone had the option to do this. Like my mom who then and now works hard as a cleaner.
This photo was actually taken in my little sister's room. 9 years later she too is in the workforce. Infact today she's fresh off an overnight shift, desperate to deal with the insane cost of living crisis. Feminism means nothing to me without class consciousness and I wonder if in another 9 years my sister and I will finally have access to affordable housing and fair pay?

Maine is home and I'm thinking about it a lot as π§ escalate their presence in our cities this week. I was speaking to my dad who described the situation as "scary and confusing" and said there'd been a briefing about it at the hospital he works for. My dad is a photographer too, an ultrasonographer.
He not only taught me about the power of images but also what it means to be a good neighbour.
If I know one thing about Mainers it's we know how to deal with icy conditions. And like Minnesotan's we got a whole lotta moxie.
______
Remember taking our cameras and freezing our asses off in Acadia @zeuxisphotography? You took these photos of me in my 'natural habitat' over a decade ago now (which officially means I'm old, you're ancient, and our friendship is eternal) x

Had an great time today making contact sheets and even enlarging one of the negatives with @wendy_stone. I'm so grateful for your generosity in showing me around the darkroom! Thanks for doing all the maths and not even minding when I accidentally wrote with the permanent marker on your beautiful white board.

I'm thrilled to be chairing this extraordinary conversation next Friday between photographer Phil Polglaze and retired barrister Terry Munyard.
Between 1979-1996, Polglaze was commissioned to photograph London's public toilets as evidence in defence of gay men accused of 'cottaging', creating an unprecedented archive that challenged police entrapment tactics and helped exonerate defendants.
This is a powerful piece of LGBTQ+ history that deserves to be heard.
Thank you @jilkegolbach for bringing the work to Oxford and thank you @jollyfarmersox for giving us a space to share it!
