The @afrikafilmfestivalkoeln 2023 edition is over, and once again I leave this festival with pure joy and inspired by all the filmmakers and conversations we had.

It was a pleasure working in the curation of the main program this year with my dear @yaa.abrefi and @amilshivji . Thank you all the team from the festival for making this possible and always a unique experience for all the guests. The director @sebastianfischer1982and his crew @jerryhelle , @malwinacronin , Lise and Ruth.🙏🏽 and Of course the festival founders Karl and Christa.

The jury award went to @shimonithefilm by @wamaiw (Angela Wanjiku Wamai). " The film's profound exploration of unspoken traumas through compelling performances and mix of local languages not only deeply moved us but also exemplifies the spirit of independent African cinema. "Shimoni" fully produced in Kenya, stands as a testament to Angela's ability as an author to craft a heavy yet subtle, powerful and poignant film with limited resources, underscoring the intricate layers of human emotions, open wounds and the struggle with trauma." 🎥

New memories were formed. The luxury of meeting new colleagues and friends ,having breakfast with @ceceereye @moussa.absa, lunch with @souleymanetatadiallo, conversations with @ikirejones @bheryvan , QAs with Alain Kassanda Katy Lena Ndiaye, watching @gabrielbarrahnio powerful shorts, long walks and meals with @missmillib talking about their beautiful films and careersis 🥰

This section from @berlinale headed by Michael Stütz is one that I hold dearly and I can't wait to sit in screening rooms with my colleagues and watch the submission films.

When Air Conditioner won the Science New Wave award back in 2020, I was introduced by @agambis to this powerful movement and soon became a member. This is our manifesto and "...as any other living organism, it will keep evolving."

I am so honored to have contributed to the curation of this year's program with the @yaa.abrefi & @amilshivji! I cannot emphasize enough the profound joy I experienced while being a filmmaker, an audience member and now curator involved with the African Film Festival Cologne (AFFK) - an indisputably key event for African filmmakers in Europe.

In this edition, the film festival pays homage to the enduring spirit that has always been at the heart of African filmmaking - Art & Activism.

Sending all the love to my curating colleagues @yaa.abrefi and @amilshivji. Looking forward to meet you again after months of zoom calls. Dear @sebastianfischer1982 thanks for making this possible!

Just quick, important note and a very common mistake that reveals how too often women's work in the film world doesn't get acknowledge or recognized: Cidade de Deus (City of God) was directed not only by Fernando Meirelles but also co-directed by Kátia Lund!
