Once when i lived in New Orleans @ladymissli and @phoebe_vlassis were up late and a swan boat at city park had come loose and we rode around in it for what feels like forever in my memory. It was such a fun, silly and romantic night. The kind i feel like happened all the time in New Orleans with my amazing friends. Missing that life a lot lately.

At FDR the swans are blue and they reminded me of that night that I want to hold onto forever. 🦢🐦 I wanted there to be some reflection on the water to call back to that night.

I made a little animation with two weavings from the show Murky Water.
.
These weavings “Chasing Lightning Bugs”are based on a memory I have being a kid down the shore at my Uncle Jerry’s house. Running around the yard at night barefoot with the soft grass under my feet.
.
All the violence and inhumanity pointed towards immigrants is disgusting! The president is disgraceful and the way our society has developed to disregard the environment is unacceptable. We can protest, donate to mutual aid, call our senators and conspire with our community!
.
All this makes me very sad and Im feeling reflective today because it’s my birthday. I made “Chasing Lighting Bugs” because i feel like i have lost some of that playful, joy that I relate with being a child. And when I think about the things that make me happy or make life feel worth living in this world it’s those moments I want to call to. Going down the shore has always been something that made me feel alive. I can imagine the smell@of salt water and the sticky air. That’s where I learned to ride a bike something that made me feel ultimate freedom and as a young adult. Its a special place andi always wanna take friends visiting from New Orleans there. I love walking the boards and swimming in the salty ocean waves.

I wove this over a year ago at a time when everything seemed at a tipping point. Here we are a year later and things somehow feel even more dire. Environmental destruction, a government that does not care about human beings, inhumane detention centers, constitutional violations, cuts to Medicaid and support for people who need it most, violence and war. Here in Philadelphia trash collectors, library workers and many more important city workers are on strike.
The only thing making me feel kinda balanced is keeping busy in the studio.
Yesterday me and Bill painted a little and worked on some paper mache. Philadelphia where do you find free news paper?
