This Black History Month, we came together to honor the legacy of Jimi Hendrix — one of the most pivotal and revolutionary figures in American music history.

Hendrix transformed rock ’n’ roll by fusing blues, soul, psychedelia, and raw innovation into something the world had never heard before. His approach to the electric guitar reshaped not just rock, but the sound and spirit of modern music itself.

This tribute is our way of celebrating his impact, his fearlessness, and his enduring influence on generations of artists.

Gil Scott Heron, known for warning us “ The revaluation will not be televised” was an outspoken leader, poet, musician and truth teller who brought prophetic vision and rhythm to resistance.

“Home is where the hatred is” is a 1971 classic touching on addiction, trauma, and fleeing a broken home. It speaks to the experiences of Black Vietnam veterans returning to the United States. Kanye West and Common later sample Scott- Herons song in a 2005 release titled “My Way Home’ off of West’s album Late Registration.

Hip hop- what once started as an underground escape for inner-city youth in the Bronx became a global phenomenon that has left a mark on culture, fashion, language and music across the world.

Hip hop, specifically rap has transformed the way we tell our stories. We gathered 3 of Massachusetts modern day griots to remind us that hip hop is here to stay as one of our oral traditions.
