For this year’s #FinancialLiteracyMonth, we’re reflecting on what Malcolm X had to say.

In his 1964 The Ballot or the Bullet speech, Malcolm spoke on financial freedom — emphasizing that a Black man’s path to true independence is through building for himself and creating opportunities within his community.

As he said: “What we will be doing is developing a situation wherein we will actually be able to create employment for the people in the community.”

This wasn’t just a statement. it was a blueprint

The renaming of Harlem’s 110th Street station in honor of Malcolm X was more than symbolic — it was a community achievement led by Senator Cordell Cleare.

Malcolm’s Echo: The Legacy of Malcolm X by Dami Rock was part of the civic drive and dialogue that helped shape this historic moment.

As we remember Malcolm X, his legacy lives on in public space.
