If you are in Sydney next week, be sure to pass by the School of Architecture (UTS Building 6) for the Bachelor of Design in Architecture Final Reviews. Our amazing students have been putting in the hours and can't wait to show us their projects!

A huge congratulations to our Master of Architecture and Master of Research students @marlinhannam, @jamesss.gomez, @nancyysunn, @laibajml, @jaay_ciii and Josef Sfara on publishing their research at this year’s Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia Conference (CAADRIA).
Their work represents an impressive and diverse body of research, exploring the use of multi-objective evolutionary computation to reimagine and reconfigure urban places across a range of locations and ecological contexts. These projects were developed through a Master’s design studio led by UTS academic Associate Professor Mohammed Makki.
The students travelled to Taiwan to present their work to the international computational design community, where they contributed to rich and engaging discussions with leading architectural and computational experts from around the world.
A fantastic achievement - congratulations to our outstanding students!

The Master of Architecture program invites you to the “Quantifying Quality of the Urban Space” Public Exhibition.
Date: Friday 22 May
Time: 5:00pm–6:00pm
Location: UTS Architecture Building (Building 6), Level 5 Gallery
The work on display is part of the ‘Quantifying Quality’ Travelling Master Studio held in December 2025 led by Associate professor Mohammed Makki. The studio explores how both quantitative and qualitative data can inform urban design by integrating measurable environmental factors with the more intangible aspects of urban life, such as social experience, cultural context, and human perception. Students developed alternative urban futures for selected suburbs in Abu Dhabi using evolutionary computation and advanced generative design methods, producing proposals that are both analytically grounded and responsive to lived experience. By combining climatic, environmental, and socio-cultural data, the projects present contextually sensitive and innovative approaches to urban design. Delivered collaboratively between the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Abu Dhabi University (ADU), with international exchange and on-site engagement in Abu Dhabi, and supported by industry partners SJB Sydney, the studio reflects a strong integration of research, education, and professional practice.

SWAMP CAMP visit to Wild Plant Rescue Nursery in Katoomba for the Masters of Architecture and Landscape Architecture Students. Learning in depth about seed collection and horticulture’s role in ecology restoration.
Thank you to the amazing volunteers who showed us around and let us into the exclusive fernery!
Plant of the month was my favourite grass, Gymnoschoenus sphaerocephalus (button grass).
We finished the day with a rainy walk through Popes Glen Swamp in Blackheath.
It’s such a joy to teach this incredible group of students. They all lead with curiosity and respect as they follow threads of design, critique and reflection. Everyday is a blessing!

The idea of home is changing. Rising costs, new technologies and shifting ways of living are reshaping how Australians design, build and experience the spaces around them. From sustainable materials and smarter construction to flexible layouts that support work, family and community, the future of housing is already taking shape.
Join us on 2 March 2026 for a timely conversation on the changing idea of home. UTS Professor Anthony Burke, host of Grand Designs Australia, in conversation with architecture aficionado Tim Ross, will explore how the Australian dream is evolving across design, culture and the way we live.
This live event will include an opportunity for audience questions and discussion.
