I’m so saddened by the news out of LA right now. So many people losing their homes, so many iconic structures gone. The only silver lining is that the city & region are united in a shared experience. It reminds me of 9/9/2020, when I was punch listing my project in Woodside, during the apocalyptic “orange sky” day. Everyone here knows where they were that afternoon.I pray the weather cooperates with firefighting efforts and the impacted families & communities can begin to heal

It’s coming together on our Atherton project. Our client wanted to continue windows behind the stove. So we suspended a marble(-clad) hood out from the wall and provided a (tempered) glass shield covering entire window, which will make for easier cleaning.#yesmaam, #athertonhomes #toyastudio

We love collaboration with talented colleagues & clients, so it’s extra special when they are one and the same.I worked with @alexistompkins and her husband Ian to re-imagine their “Earthquake Shack” & back cottage, to explore both short term and long term possibilities for their growing family. It’s also extra special to get a shout out in @archdigest, along with the delightful & talented @ericatimbrelldesign Congratulations to Alexis, Ian and the fabulous @chromasf crew.

Breathing new life into an SOM brutalist building and maintaining some soul. Our Stanford Law Lounge renovation included the removal of a massive arcade and opened up the exterior wall. This let in the light and provided a more pleasant environment for dining, studying and lounging. Reclaimed & repurposed materials provided a connection to the past.

Lakeview Presbyterian Church, Chicago-Designed by John Root & completed in 1888.I lived in the area in the early 90’s. At the time it was clad in asbestos shingles & painted white & green. Restored in 2005 by Holabird & Root to its former glory. It’s glorious indeed.

These are two windows in the same room, at the home of Impressionist painter Joaquin Sorolla. I was particularly obsessed with the first one.No heavy frames.Just gridded glass, clinging onto the masonry wall.Inside it made the room feel connected to the outdoors, yet private. The round bay window is much more formal. But the columns and cornice openings similarly add a sense of expansion to the room. I will share more about this exceptional house museum later.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Canary Islands and witness the power & vulnerability of nature in many forms, ( in a very small place.). These pix are from the same island, same day. Every microclimate is beautiful in its own way. Each valley, peak & coastline had examples of responsible human interventions, which allow the ecosystem to thrive. But there were plenty ofcareless developments as well, products of a quick buck, taxing resources & interrupting both water flow + migration patterns. Every day was a testament to the earth’s profound beauty and a reminder that is our responsibility to protect it.

Last month walking around Valencia, I was smitten with the many examples of metal-clad doors (always on Churches). With their various embossed and nailed patterns. Some told stories, others were purely patterns or textures…but they were all beautiful

For over 20yrs Valencia Spain has lived in my imagination because of these buildings (creatures?) by Santiago Calatrava. It was worth tacking on a few days to my trip to tour them in person. This science & art complex offers a full dose of both, before stepping foot indoors. I was impressed with the functionality of the performing arts building and science building. The complex sits in a green belt, surrounding the old city, (former river, I surmise) so the approach can be by bike path or streets above. The park covers a massive parking structure and rehearsal spaces for the Berkeley school of music.
