🗞️[amNY] NADA and the Necessary Electricity of Discovery
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Esaí Alfredo’s The Necklace from 2026, presented by Spinello Projects out of Miami, moved in yet another direction, with photorealism carrying an almost devotional charge. The work’s majestic, ethereal color application gave realism a strange luminosity, reminding us that technical mastery need not be cold when animated by atmosphere and psychological depth. Photorealism, at its strongest, is not merely a demonstration of skill. It becomes a philosophical trapdoor. The viewer enters through recognition and then finds something more elusive waiting beneath the surface.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In Alfredo’s hands, reality appears heightened, almost consecrated. The image does not simply reproduce the visible world. It intensifies it. There is a hush in that kind of looking, a sense that the ordinary has been slowed down enough to become ceremonial. The necklace becomes more than adornment. It becomes a point of focus, a charged emblem of intimacy, identity, and attention [...]”

🗞️[OBSERVER] “Miami-based Spinello Projects presented a sentimental, hyperrealistic sequence of narrative-driven paintings by Puerto Rican artist Esai Alfredo, isolating delicate moments of human connection and emotional exchange against the infinity of the night horizon. Expanding on his ongoing exploration of memory, belonging and queer identity, these atmospheric paintings were inspired in part by the closing scene of Wicked, in which two protagonists reflect on the lasting impact of their bond before parting. The series is also a poetic revisitation of the artist’s own experience of migration between Puerto Rico and the United States, which was shaped by the rhythms of connection and farewell, distance and displacement, as that of an entire generation that grew up within today’s global mobility. By the evening, the gallery had sold more than half the booth [...]”

Congratulations to Naama Tsabar on the recent acquisition of her work by Hamburger Bahnhof – National Gallery for Contemporary Art following her 2024 solo exhibition, Estuaries. ✨

The museum has acquired Work on Felt (Variation 22) Dark Blue (2023), Inversion #6 (2021), and Inversion #4 (2021). Inversion #4 will be included in the upcoming collection rehang, opening 12 June 2026 as part of A Thousand Times Berlin.

Blurring sculpture, sound, and performance, Tsabar’s Work on Felt series transforms raw felt into playable, evolving instruments. The tension of the strings shapes both the form and the sound, so changes in pitch are directly reflected in the sculpture’s physical state. Each work is activated through interaction, inviting audiences to engage with it as both object and instrument.

Her Inversions series extends this dialogue into architecture, activating hidden spaces within walls. Inspired by the acoustics of instrument sound holes, these works respond to touch and movement, producing layered sonic environments drawn from field recordings of Brood X cicadas and vocal elements.

Special thanks to Artis for their support.

Work on Felt (Variation 22) Dark Blue, 2023
felt, carbon fiber, epoxy, wood, archival PVA, guitar Tuner, piano string, cable stops, aluminum, piezo microphone, guitar amplifier
197 x 166 x 65 cm, unique

Inversion #4, 2021
voice of Wolf Weston, sound of BroodX cicadas, wood, varnish, paint, infra-red sensors, Arduino, WAV trigger, wiCoding: Brian Oakesres, cable port, cables, purfling
244 x 157 x 42 cm, unique

Inversion #6, 2021

Demeter, (The Birth Of Florida), 2026
Incorporating Art Deco architectural forms, ornamental motifs, and stylized representations of waves, Nina Surel’s ceramic mural envisions Florida’s birth through a mythic, feminine lens. The composition features a central human figure that embodies Florida as a fertile goddess, encircled by palm trees, an alligator, a roseate spoonbill, and other native flora and fauna. Linked to mythological archetypes like Demeter, the Greek goddess of harvest, agriculture, and fertility, Surel’s work underscores her interest in mysticism, botany, and humanity’s connection to nature.

In contrast to historical narratives of European conquest—specifically, Juan Ponce de León’s 1513 expedition—Surel reframes Florida’s origin as one grounded in birth and fertility, shifting the focus towards coexistence and ecological interdependence.
The mural’s unglazed, sandy surface evokes the texture of a sandcastle, referencing the state’s shores. Building on the themes in her earlier work, Surel depicts the peninsula as a generative presence intrinsically linked to the environment that sustains her. The work invites viewers into a symbolic geography where past, present, and future converge, and the divine feminine emerges as a source of knowledge, care, and continuity.

🐚 Nina Surel x @delanomiamibeach — Nina Surel’s commissioned work, The Multiverse is Singing Our Song, is now on view at the newly reopened Delano South Beach!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Rooted in Florida’s ecological histories and shaped through richly textured stoneware, Surel’s sculptural practice explores transformation, myth, fertility, and feminine identity through surreal botanical and symbolic forms.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Originally opened in 1947, the iconic Delano returns following a six-year restoration led by Ennismore, with hotel’s inaugural art program curated by Nicola Green.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With special thanks to Delano South Beach and the team behind Nicola Green’s curatorial vision for their support and collaboration.

📣UNREAL — An invitational survey exhibition presented by Secrist | Beach featuring Spinello Projects’ artists: Esaí Alfredo, Nereida Garcia-Ferraz, Jared McGriff, and Nina Surel
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍Secrist | Beach
1801 West Hubbard Street
Chicago IL 60622
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🗓️Exhibition Hours
April 10 - June 13, 2026
Tuesday to Friday, 10am - 6pm
Saturday, 11am - 5pm
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
UNREAL is an invitational survey exhibition featuring fourteen artists exploring these strange and anxious times through the guise of surrealism. One hundred years later, the core principles of surrealism still revolve around dreamlike narratives, symbolic iconography, distorted or abstract humor, illusionistic play of materials and mediums, and the stretching of rationality in pursuit of liberation. UNREAL takes a flexible, contemporaneous interpretation of these ideologies while keeping a wary eye on the complexities of the current socio-political, conceptual, and philosophical concerns taking place now.

Participating artists: Esaí Alfredo, Dan Attoe, Ever Baldwin, Omar Barquet, Chris Bradley, Ginny Casey, Josh Dihle, Al Freeman, Nereida Garcia-Ferraz, Lola Gil, Naomi Hawksley, Rodrigo Imaz, Jared McGriff, Kitty Rauth and Nina Surel
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

📣UNREAL — An invitational survey exhibition presented by Secrist | Beach featuring Spinello Projects’ artists: Esaí Alfredo, Nereida Garcia-Ferraz, Jared McGriff, and Nina Surel
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍Secrist | Beach
1801 West Hubbard Street
Chicago IL 60622
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🗓️Exhibition Hours
April 10 - June 13, 2026
Tuesday to Friday, 10am - 6pm
Saturday, 11am - 5pm
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
UNREAL is an invitational survey exhibition featuring fourteen artists exploring these strange and anxious times through the guise of surrealism. One hundred years later, the core principles of surrealism still revolve around dreamlike narratives, symbolic iconography, distorted or abstract humor, illusionistic play of materials and mediums, and the stretching of rationality in pursuit of liberation. UNREAL takes a flexible, contemporaneous interpretation of these ideologies while keeping a wary eye on the complexities of the current socio-political, conceptual, and philosophical concerns taking place now.

Participating artists: Esaí Alfredo, Dan Attoe, Ever Baldwin, Omar Barquet, Chris Bradley, Ginny Casey, Josh Dihle, Al Freeman, Nereida Garcia-Ferraz, Lola Gil, Naomi Hawksley, Rodrigo Imaz, Jared McGriff, Kitty Rauth and Nina Surel
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⛰️[Artrabbit] Pleasure, Intellect, and the Soft Sell: Dallas Art Week — A tale of two fairs in Dallas offers a revealing snapshot of the U.S. art market today, where escapism, accessibility, and intellect quietly compete for attention.

“For others, home was presented in a more abstracted light. Marlon Portales, represented by Spinello Projects in Miami, described his lush, vivid landscapes as spiritual in nature. His most recent body of work places the artist’s characters in oversized, sensual environments, the land dwarfing lovers and wanderers, consuming and eating them. The landscapes are colorful interpretations of both real countryside in Cuba, where he grew up, as well as imagined. [...]”
