How to Shoot Kodak Ektachrome 100

Ektachrome is almost as iconic as Kodachrome. Resurrected in 2019, This is a modernised emulsion for the modern world. Also called E100, Ektachrome 100 is my favourite film stock. I love how it renders true-to-life colours with exceptional sharpness and neutral contrast. With Ektachrome, you don’t overexpose, and you certainly don’t underexpose. But really, you need to meter for the midtones. If you get it right, you’ll get gorgeous, true-to-life images. The closest thing to digital photography but with the charm of analog.

Here’s a tip on countering the blue base of E100: use a Tiffen 81A warming filter. You can also use a polarizer.

Now for the bad part: Ektachrome is really expensive these days. A roll can cost you 30 euros. That doesn’t account for the development, which is also more costly than the standard C-41. But if possible, I suggest you try Ektachrome at least once!

🎞️ Film type: Colour Reversal film - daylight-balanced
🎨 Colour Palette: True to Life
🌓 Contrast: Medium to High
🎚️ Grain: Very Fine Grain
🧪 Development: E6
🧑🏼‍🔬 Push/Pull: Not recommended

☀️ Best under: Sunny days and studio environment
💡 Metering: Meter for mid tones
📷 Best filter for landscape: Polarizer (bold colours)
📷 Filter for everyday work: Warming Filter: Tiffen 81A

We’re reaching the tail end of the herring spawn along Vancouver Island’s east coast. Have you ever seen it with your own eyes?

If not, we made a short film about the chase: A @wildjourney.media Chasing the Herring Spawn on Vancouver Island.

Watch it on YouTube!

A quiet shoreline lesson: herring roe are tiny eggs laid in dense mats on eelgrass, seaweed, and shoreline rocks during the spawn.

To notice safely, keep it simple: look, photograph, and observe — but do not harvest. Stay on firm ground and don’t step on the roe or eelgrass (it’s a fragile habitat). If you’re visiting with dogs, keep them off the egg mats, too.

A quick life check: when the eggs are translucent, they’re generally still alive; when they turn opaque or milky white, they’re no longer viable.

How long can roe survive out of the water? Pacific herring eggs are adapted to the intertidal zone and can remain viable for several hours during low tide, especially when it’s cool, as long as the egg masses stay moist!

And that “snowy” coating on the beach? That’s milt — the sperm released into the water during spawning, sometimes washing ashore in foamy drifts.

Check out our film “Chasing the Herring Spawn” on YouTube!

The Pacific Herring spawn has already begun on Vancouver Island and will soon be appearing on the east coasts from Comox to Nanaimo and beyond.
The tricky part is catching it where and when it arrives but we can’t wait to share what we’ve seen and learned during our adventure discovering this remarkable phenomenon

Thrilled to share that Pacific Weave is heading to the 2026 Salt Spring Film Festival alongside so many incredible films and running from February 27 to March 1. I am honoured to bring this film back to the island where we shot it, alongside the incredible basket maker Joan Carrigan.

One of the first things I wanted to do when moving to Vancouver Island was learning the stories of local artists shaped by the West Coast. That wish led me to Joan, who discovered her passion for basket weaving while travelling to the South Pacific. Isn’t it inspiring when travel reveals your calling? Over three days on Salt Spring, Joan opened up about her journey, the mentors who guided her here, and now her own role passing knowledge to the next generation. It was exciting to see Pacific Weave screened at the Victoria Film Festival last year. But I feel particularly grateful to see Pacific Weave back on Salt Spring, back to where it began. It feels like closing the loop.

When people ask why I moved to Vancouver Island, I say, “For the whales.” It’s the simplest answer. It’s also the truest. I grew up watching Free Willy, believing the ocean always delivered happy endings. Since I learnt that the real spectacle isn’t in concrete tanks, it’s in the waiting, the anticipation as you wait hours on windswept shores knowing there are no guarantees. You can’t demand the sea to perform. But when a humpback surfaces fifteen metres from shore, close enough to see barnacles and feel its breath, you understand why we keep coming back.

January has always been a dry month for me photographically. It’s not intentional, just the weather, wrapping up last year’s projects, and honestly, not being in the groove. But even in these quiet months, if you keep your camera bag ready, something always shows up.

Most of these photographs came from a short mid-December trip between Nanaimo, Galiano, and Victoria. Though small by distance, the journey was filled with movement; float planes, ferries, and winding along narrow roads. Along the way, there were small discoveries, the kind that remind you why you keep carrying a camera (or more).

In the final days of the month, I always comb through my Lightroom catalogue, checking whether my images of the month are selected, edited, and exported. Initially, this was done solely to free up space on my current 1TB internal SSD, which is considered small by today’s standards.
Over the past few months, though, I’ve started building small collections of my favourite photographs taken within the last month. This is a great way to also see what happened during that time, the photoshoots, the hikes and everything in between, really. That’s how I got the idea of publishing my favourite images in an article with the story behind each photo, including why I took the shot and, potentially, the technique as well.
To keep things concise, I landed on 5 images per month.
