Let’s not just yap all day on the internet about what we assume makes us important within our industry.
Cultural leaders and artists like myself are pushing forGrime and other foundational UK underground genres (like Jungle, Drum & Bass, UK Garage and UK Rap) to be officially recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Assets.
If Grime, UK Rap , Jungle, Drum & Bass, and UK Garage gain UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status, it will trigger 6 major changes
1. Venue Protection: Historic clubs, independent studios, and community hubs gain legal shield against gentrification and noise complaints.
2. Public Funding: The government must provide grants for youth music workshops, community equipment, and pirate radio archive preservation.
3. School Integration: The genres enter the national music and history curriculum, teaching students about 140 BPM production and Black-British cultural impact.
4. Global Prestige: The music achieves the same official cultural standing as Jamaican reggae, driving international music tourism to the UK.
5. Artist Equity: Pioneers get leverage to fight for fairer streaming royalties, contracts, and recognition for working-class creators.
6. Decriminalisation of the scene: Historically, UK underground music has faced systemic gatekeeping, venue restrictions, and over-policing (such as the legacy of Form 696). UNESCO status fundamentally triggers institutional validation, reframing these genres globally as powerful expressions of British identity, youth culture, and world history.
Let’s push for stability for ourselves and the generations coming after us. We do not want the future generations having to fight for the same things when they get to our age. If they find themselves fighting for the same rights it means we failed.
Thank you @greatescapefest @ntiaofficial for having us.
