Britain's largest bird of prey is returning. 🦅

In a landmark moment for nature recovery, we've approved a new licence to release more white-tailed eagles to the south coast of England. The birds will be released in Exmoor National Park.

These magnificent birds, with wingspans of up to 2.5 metres, were lost from southern England over 240 years ago. Thanks to carefully planned reintroductions, supported by extensive engagement and monitoring, they're returning.

This new licensed project, led by @forestryengland and the @roydenniswildlifefoundation will add to their existing programme of releases on the Isle of Wight. It takes some years for released birds to mature and form territories, but in 2023 the project saw the first white-tailed eagle chicks in England for over 240 years!

Happy 100th birthday, Sir David Attenborough. 🌍🎈

As a child growing up in Leicester, Sir David used to play among the rocks and paddle in the streams of Bradgate Park, a place that helped spark his lifelong dedication to showcasing the beauty and fragility of our natural world.

We’re proud that Bradgate Park is a designated National Nature Reserve, safeguarding some of the oldest fossils on Earth, a number of which are over 560 million years old.

National Nature Reserves don’t just benefit nature, but people too. The landscapes that shaped one of the world's greatest naturalists are still out there waiting for the next generation to explore. 💚

Did you know the UK is home to around 40% of the world’s grey seals and 32% of harbour seals? 🦭

They're two of our most loved marine species but they're sensitive to disturbance from people, pets and noise. If you're heading to the coast this Spring, make sure to:

🏖️ give seals space on land and in the water. If a seal is looking at you, you're too close.
🐕 keep dogs on a lead in coastal areas. Our four-legged friends can stress and even pass diseases to seals.
🕹️ avoid drones near seals. Overhead disturbance can be just as harmful as getting too close on foot.
🤫 observe quietly — noise can disturb resting or feeding behaviour
🗑️ take all litter home to prevent harm and pollution

Small actions add up to a big difference for our marine mammals. Click the link in our bio for more advice from the Marine and Coastal Wildlife Code.

Happy International Beaver Day! To celebrate, we have some exciting updates on the beavers released at Purbeck back in March last year…

[Video description: beavers captured on trail cams at night swimming, carrying branches and gnawing trees. Text overlaid reads: Just over a year ago two pairs of Eurasian beavers made history as the first legally released wild beavers in England. They have already been hard at work transforming their home at Studland in Dorset. Once dense woodland is now a thriving wetland habitat: they’ve built a 35-metre dam and created ponds, sunlight reaches the forest floor, with life flourishing both above and below water. Otters, barn owls, and rare birds are visiting, with more wildlife expected this spring and summer. Once hunted to extinction in England in the 16th century beavers have a big part to play in nature restoration, preventing flooding, improving water quality and much more in-between. There could even be kits born at Purbeck this summer, a sure sign of a the beavers thriving on their return. Nature in this small corner of England is recovering, and this is just the start.]

The Coast to Coast route is now a National Trail!

Running from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay, the route draws from the inspiration of Alfred Wainwright and journeys through the @yorkshiredales and finishes at Robin Hood's Bay in the @northyorkmoors

In the Lake District, people taking on the 190-mile route will travel from Cumbria's west coast through stunning scenery of Ennerdale, Grasmere and Patterdale.

On Monday we celebrated the launch of the Coast to Coast as a National Trail in Ennerdale with an event to showcase the hard work of all those involved in the Coast to Coast upgrades.

Our staff and partners shared stories and insights about the work they had done on the trail over the last three years, including improving accessibility, creating consistent high-quality signage and better opportunities for cyclists and equestrians.

Attendees were then taken on a guided walk by Lake District National Park Authority staff to see the National Trail for themselves and take the first few steps of a scenic adventure.

The iconic Coast to Coast Path is England’s newest National Trail. 🎉

Spanning three National Parks, from the cliffs of St Bees Head, Cumbria, to the harbour of Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire, this 190-mile route connects people to some of northern England's most treasured landscapes.

National Trail status will help give more people the chance to experience it, with improved accessibility and restored paths for walkers, and wheelers alike.

This milestone is the culmination of £5.5 million government investment and years of work with local communities, businesses and partners including @national.trails, @lakdistrictnpa, @yorkshiredales and @northyorkmoors.

The route has inspired thousands since famous fell walker, Alfred Wainwright, first walked it over fifty years ago, and as a National Trail it will continue to do so for generations to come.

For the first time in history, the legal right to walk England's entire coastline will be guaranteed for everyone. The Coast Path connects people to some of our most precious landscapes, supporting wellbeing, nature recovery and coastal communities along the way.

We were thrilled to be joined by His Majesty The King yesterday to celebrate over 16 years of hard work from Natural England and partners across the country.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible — from local authorities and landowners to partners including @national.trails, @ramblersgb and Disabled Ramblers.
