Just four years ago, the Savannah Bananas were one of thousands of summer baseball teams around the country. Now, they’re playing on ESPN, selling out Yankee Stadium and drawing 102,000 fans to college football stadiums.
“Our goal is to make baseball fun, be fans first and entertain always,” head coach Tyler Gillum said. “Where people get confused is they think, because we’re entertaining, we don’t care about the performance on the baseball side of it, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. ... If there’s a bunch of errors, it’s sloppy and pitchers can’t throw strikes, this doesn’t work.”
At their core, the players in the Banana Ball Championship League are players who have spent decades playing a sport they love in pursuit of a dream.
Reese Alexiades, after he wasn’t drafted out of Pepperdine, played two seasons in the Pioneer League, where he won MVP in 2023 — but he still didn’t hear from any MLB teams. “That’s just how it goes,” Alexiades said. “I love baseball to death, so I’m going to play as long as I can.”

Tennessee officials will pay $835,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a man who was jailed for more than a month over a Facebook post he made about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
While many people across the U.S. lost their jobs over social media comments about Kirk’s death, Larry Bushart’s case stood out as a rare instance in which such online speech led to criminal prosecution.
The 61-year-old retired police officer spent 37 days behind bars before authorities dropped the felony charge against him in October.
Bushart was arrested in September after he refused to take down Facebook memes that joked about Kirk’s killing, which had prompted an outpouring of grief among conservatives.

NBC News’ @newsjul describes hearing a series of gunshots outside the White House, which was briefly locked down on Saturday evening.

A white supremacist group is facing a federal discrimination lawsuit filed by a real estate broker who says she was barred from purchasing property in their rural Arkansas community because of her Jewish ancestry, Black husband, and biracial children.
Michelle Walker, who is also white and Christian, alleges in her complaint that the Return to the Land organization rejected her application because it “is explicitly attempting to establish an all-white community.”
Her application portal now reads that she was not accepted because she was “not an ideal fit” for the community, the complaint states.
There was no immediate response from RTTL to the lawsuit. In a July interview with NBC News, group co-founder Eric Orwoll made it clear that only white people are welcome in their 40-member community in Ravenden, Arkansas.
“What we’ve done here is establish a place where we have control over who our neighbors are,” Orwoll said. “And that is just for the sake of preserving, you know, our culture....white American culture.”

Strapped to a gurney, moments from death, prisoners in Texas’ execution chamber have been asked a solemn question for as long as the state has administered lethal injections: Do you have a last statement?
Texas last week carried out its 600th execution. The state is unrivaled in its pursuit of capital punishment, accounting for more than a third of all executions nationwide since the Supreme Court ruled the death penalty constitutional in 1976.
The crimes of the executed have included the slayings of wives and children, store clerks and strangers. Those convicted include serial killers, bank robbers and avowed racists.
The statements show that across 50 years, little has changed in the way people on the row face their impending deaths. Last words are last words, despite the passage of time, conveying similar messages of sorrow, love, anger, camaraderie, defiance, hope and guilt.
