The night George Pino crashed his boat into a Biscayne Bay channel marker, killing one teen girl and traumatically injuring another, he told a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission investigator that he lost control because a larger boat heading toward him in the channel caused a large wake.

Pino maintained that narrative months later in sworn statements in a civil case filed by one of the girls’ families and in a petition to limit his financial liability in any lawsuits resulting from the accident.

Now, Pino’s attorneys are asking Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez to bar prosecutors from mentioning the second-boat theory during the Doral real estate broker’s trial on manslaughter and vessel homicide charges.

The attempt to keep the theory of the other boat from jurors is one of a flurry of 11th-hour motions that Pino’s defense team filed this week as his June 1 trial approaches. Pino’s lawyers also want to shield the jury from hearing that Pino told police he had “two beers” that day, that a witness said his eyes were bloodshot when he was rescued from the water and that cops found 61 empty booze containers on his boat when they pulled it from the water the day after the crash. #georgepino #boatcrash #trial #miami #dade #lucyhernandez #vessel #homicide

The anchor of the Miami Dolphins’ legendary “No Name Defense,” unit that helped the Dolphins reach three consecutive Super Bowls has died.

Manuel “Manny” Fernandez, a legendary Dolphins defensive lineman who was a key pillar of the 1972 undefeated team, passed away on May 24, at the age of 79. The cause of his death is unknown at this time.

The two-time Super Bowl champion, who played his entire NFL career (1968-1975) with the Dolphins, was known for his relentless motor and toughness.

“His consistency and selfless contributions on the field were instrumental to the Dolphins’ success throughout the early 1970s, particularly in the team’s three consecutive Super Bowl appearances, in which he produced some of the most memorable defensive performances in the history of the game,” the Dolphins organization said in a team issues statement. “Our thoughts are with the family, loved ones and teammates as we remember one of the best players in Dolphins history.” #miami #dolphins #mannyfernandez #death #obituary #nfl #1972 #undefeated

If you got a speeding ticket in Miami-Dade County this year, the citation likely came from a privately run speed camera outside of a school, according to new data from the local court system.

Launched in Florida two years ago after a change in state law, the cameras accounted for 68% of all Miami-Dade speeding tickets during the first three months of 2026, according to data provided to the Miami Herald by the Office of the Clerk and Comptroller.

Of the 76,316 speeding citations processed by that office between January and March, fewer than 25,000 were issued by police. The rest — 51,721 citations — started with automated cameras run by private companies under contracts with local governments in Miami-Dade, according to the data.

The numbers are the latest metric on how prolific the cameras are at catching local drivers speeding — a system that critics say is more focused on profits than concerns about dangerous driving around schools. The cameras operate throughout the school day, meaning that people driving by when no children are outside are still subject to automated speeding violations generated by a camera.

Less than two weeks before Doral real estate broker George Pino is set to stand trial in a Miami-Dade courthouse over his role in a boat crash that killed one teen and maimed another, he and his legal team are asking a judge to move the proceeding to Palm Beach County or Orlando.

In a motion filed this month, Pino’s legal team argues an “impartial jury” of Pino’s peers does not exist in Miami-Dade County because the case has been “well-publicized.” His lawyers cited the Miami Herald’s investigative coverage of the fatal crash, along with widespread television coverage. His trial is set to begin on June 1.

In September 2022, Pino crashed his boat with 13 passengers aboard into a Biscayne Bay channel marker. Luciana “Lucy” Fernandez, 17, was killed and Katerina “Katy” Puig, now 21, suffered brain injuries and lifelong disabilities.

In their plea to Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez, Pino’s lawyers alleged the Herald “published multiple articles perpetuating an entirely false narrative of what took place on Sept. 4, 2022.”

The Herald’s “Wrecked Justice” series raised questions about authorities’ handling of the crash investigation.

Prosecutors, who initially charged Pino with three careless-boating misdemeanors, later upped those charges to felony vessel homicide and manslaughter, though Pino can only be convicted on one or the other of those charges.

House and Senate leaders reached a final deal on the state budget late Sunday night, the last step in an extended process that required a special session to complete for the second year in a row.

The spending plan for the fiscal year that starts July 1 will be nearly $115 billion, less than the Senate’s preferred budget but not the $113.6 billion plan preferred by the House.

House Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami, had insisted on larger cuts to the existing budget, fearing projected deficits in future years if spending wasn’t curtailed. The chambers couldn’t reach an agreement during the regular session that ended March 13.

Legislators plan to approve the budget Friday and send it to Gov. Ron DeSantis. #florida #politics #rondesantis #specialsession #deal #budget #education #everglades

The sun was bright at the Miami Beach Police Department as nearly 150 people showed up in 83-degree weather Monday morning to pay respects to active, retired and fallen members of the Armed Forces.

“It’s a sacred day of remembrance,” said retired Army Lt. Col. Jackie Tam. “We want to pause and honor those that never made it home. They answered a call greater than themselves.”

Tam served in the Army for 30 years and is the post commander at VFW Post 3559 on West Avenue in Miami Beach.

During the hourlong event, elected officials extended their appreciation for military service members and their work. A moment of silence was held in honor of those who have died, and a 21-gun salute was loudly held in their memory.

“What we can do is stand here today and every day and thank them, and honor them and their families,” said Miami Beach Mayor Steve Meiner. “Because we would not be sitting here with the freedoms and the democracy that sometimes we take for granted.” #miami #dade #miamibeach #memorialday #veterans #military #girlscouts

Inter Miami captain and Argentine star Lionel Messi appeared to grab the back of his left leg and was subbed off before Sunday’s wild 6-4 win over the Philadelphia Union had ended, something he never does, sparking speculation that he felt a twinge of pain and didn’t want to take any chances with the World Cup kicking off in two weeks.

All the Messi fans at Nu Stadium, and Argentina fans around the world, surely took note of Messi’s early exit as the defending World Cup champions begin defense of their title on June 16. The hope was that the 38-year-old icon would remain a key player for the squad.

Inter Miami interim coach Guillermo Hoyos said Messi complained of “fatigue” and asked to leave the game, but Hoyos said they don’t yet have any more details. He said when a player is feeling tired, the team cannot take any risks and must take precautions.

He came out in the 73rd minute and went straight to the locker room with Inter Miami and the Philadelphia Union tied 4-4 after combining for an MLS-record eight first half goals. Mateo Silvetti replaced him. #intermiami #mls #lionelmessi #philadelphia #union #luissuarez #nustadium

Ruth Shack came to Miami Beach in 1953 on her honeymoon and never returned.

She and her groom, Richard Shack, fell in love with the area on a two-week trip after their wedding and decided to stay — a decision that would change not only their own lives, but also the future of the new city they called home.
Shack would later enter politics, serving three terms as a Dade County commissioner, and then entering the nonprofit world as head of the Dade Community Foundation (now The Miami Foundation). She became known as a fierce advocate for the LGBTQ community after sponsoring in 1977 an amendment to Miami-Dade’s Human Rights Ordinance that protected people from workplace, housing and other types of discrimination based on their sexual orientation.

“She was a force to be reckoned with,” said Richard Milstein, Shack’s friend. “She was always speaking her mind and fighting for everyone. She set a pattern for all of us for what we should do.” #miami #dade #obituary #ruthshack #death #socialjustice #lgbtq

Weeks after the collapse of hometown Spirit Airlines, JetBlue Airways is doubling down on serving Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, giving Florida’s third-largest airport a needed boost.

The carrier is adding dozens of daily flights to and from FLL, reaching more destinations, and making the airport a hub this year, meaning scheduling JetBlue flights in a way that travelers can arrive there and have ample options to connect elsewhere, JetBlue President Marty St. George said in an interview with the Miami Herald on Friday. The company is also expanding a pilot base in Broward.

Additionally, New York-based JetBlue has been hiring crew members from Spirit Airlines, the Broward-based carrier that shut down on May 2, the executive said.
“Right now, we’re bigger than we’ve ever been at FLL,” St. George said. “And we’re going to get a lot bigger.”

By July, JetBlue expects to have about 128 daily flights, up from 108 now. By February 2027, the airline plans to have about 150. But that number won’t likely hold for long. #southflorida #ftlauderdale #airport #jetblue #spirit #hub #airline #fll

Enrique Tarrio, the former national head of the Proud Boys, who was convicted of seditious conspiracy for his role in the January 6 attack on the Capitol, says he will seek millions of dollars from the fund President Trump created to pay his supporters who believe they have been politically persecuted.

“Look, people don’t have to like me, but to say that I got 22 years correctly, is wrong,” Tarrio told CBS News Miami. “I was targeted, and I do believe that this fund does apply to me.”
Tarrio said since President Trump announced the formation of the $1.8 billion so-called anti-weaponization fund, he has been inundated with calls from others convicted for January 6 related activities.

“I’ve gotten probably a million calls in the past three days from J-6ers that are like, OK, how does this work?” Tarrio told CBS Miami’s Jim DeFede. “And I’m like, look, I’m not, I’m not a guru. I don’t, I don’t know how this works. I can only speculate.” #miami #dade #proudboys #enriquetarrio #donaldtrump #january6 #antiwaeponizationfund
