MIT Recreation
Providing health & wellness opportunities for the #MIT community & the city of #Cambridge.

Memorial Day Weekend is almost here! ☀️ If you’re trading the pool for a lake, river, or ocean this weekend, remember that open water has its own set of rules. #WaterSafetyWednesday
🦺 Wear a Life Jacket! Make sure it’s U.S. Coast Guard-approved. (Inflatables and water wings don’t count!)
🌊 Respect the water: Watch out for unpredictable currents, sudden drop-offs, and changing weather.
🚩 Check the flags: Always check local beach warning flags before getting in.
Where are you spending the long weekend? Let us know below! 🏖️

Quick question: When was the last time you felt completely loose and mobile? 🤔
If you're lifting, running, or sitting at a desk all day, muscle tension can quietly cap your performance and cause imbalances. If you feel like you’ve plateaued, you aren't alone.
Our latest blog explores how Assisted Stretching bridges the gap. By allowing a professional to guide your body through passive and active stretches, you can safely target specific muscle groups to release deep tension, improve posture, and alleviate aches.

Happy #WaterSafetyWednesday! 🏊♀️
This week we're talking about smart swimming. If you’re getting your laps in at the pool this week, keep these golden rules in mind:
👣 Feet First! Never dive headfirst into shallow water. Always step or jump in feet first to protect your head and neck.
🛟 Swim near a lifeguard and always listen to their instructions—they are there to keep you safe!

On May 16th, MIT will host the Young People’s Project (YPP) at the Zesiger Center (Rockwell Cage - W33) for a community-wide celebration of math literacy and youth leadership. The morning begins with the Math Playground (10am – 12pm), featuring over 20 interactive stations where students and families can explore mathematical concepts through creative play. These activities are facilitated by YPP Math Literacy Workers (MLWs)—high school students who serve as near-peer mentors, translating complex STEM principles into engaging, hands-on experiences for younger learners and their families. This session is free and open to the entire Cambridge and MIT community.
The afternoon program features the National Flagway Tournament (2pm – 4:30pm), a high-energy competition where middle school teams from across Cambridge, the Commonwealth, and the country compete in a math-based sport. Students navigate a physical course by decoding number patterns based on a function, turning abstract mathematics into a fast-paced, team-oriented game. Between events, attendees are invited to enjoy local food trucks and attend an Elder Circle featuring a panel of veteran YPP leaders.
Event Schedule
10am – 12pm: Math Playground – 20+ interactive STEM activities led by YPP Math Literacy Workers and collaborators.
12pm – 12:30pm: Elder Circle – Discussion with YPP leaders and community members.
12:30pm – 2pm: Lunch Break – Local food trucks available for all participants.
2pm – 4:30pm: National Flagway Tournament – Competition featuring teams from across the U.S.

It’s National Water Safety Month! 🌊 All month long, we’re sharing tips for #WaterSafetyWednesday. First up: Supervision.
👀 Always designate a "Water Watcher." This is an adult whose ONLY job is to watch the water—no phones, no books, no distractions. 📱❌
👯♀️ The Buddy System: Whether you’re a beginner or an Olympic swimmer, NEVER swim alone.
