I’m incredibly excited to announce that my film “A Story of Nanjing” will be premiering this month at CineYouth, a festival presented by the Chicago International Film Festival! Thank you @chifilmfest for this recognition.

My grandfather survived the Nanjing Massacre as a child, but almost never spoke about his experience. He held it in for so many years. He passed before I was born, and since high school I have been determined to tell this story in his honor. And now I have, brought to life through performances by the amazing Happy Zhu and Jessica Xu, and with the help of our incredible crew.

I’m so full of gratitude :)

A Night with Popo - A moment from the documentary I am making about my Grandmother, my identity, and my trip to Taiwan. I spent many nights like this with Popo, greeting her, tucking her in, and asking her questions about her life. It’s memories like this that I’m most fond of.

So much of my life and family are in this documentary, and I’m still discovering how to cut it as it’s changed over time. For now, I’ve found joy in releasing short moments like this.

This past September, my grandmother (婆婆/ Popo in Chinese) passed away. She was the strongest person I’ve ever met—a refugee and immigrant who devoted her life to helping others as an OR nurse and who single-handedly supported her family after the unexpected passing of her husband, whom she loved dearly. She put family over all else, and was tough as nails.

An excerpt from what I said at her funeral: “Her aging changed what we could do with her, but her blanket of love never wavered. A long walk in the park became squeezing my hand as we fell asleep together on the couch, her head on my shoulder. And board game nights became Mission-Impossible-on-the-TV afternoons. I don’t think there was a single time we saw her where she didn’t offer to cook, check if we were cold, or ask if we needed to rest.” The last slide is a portrait I took of her that was used as her funeral photo.

I’ve spent a lot of time documenting Popo over the years—photographing, filming, and interviewing her. In this time, and through all the moments I’ve spent with her in my lifetime, I‘ve come to intimately understand a certain magic she had. Through all of her hardship, Popo always found opportunities to laugh. Slides 4-7 are photos I took of her less than a week before she passed, where she surprised us by cracking a joke even when she was struggling to speak. This was that magic. My last visit to her apartment, despite the pain, was still filled with laughter.

Popo exuded resilience, determination, and love, and instilled in my family and me the importance of upholding familial respect and Chinese cultural values. To get to know her story was the joy of a lifetime, and to be loved by her was a gift.

Photos of my 91-year-old Grandmother (slide 1) and my 101-year-old Great Aunt (slide 2). The two of them are some of the last living people in the world to have lived through the Japanese invasion of China in WWII, which overlapped with the Chinese Civil War.

Over the years I’ve documented my Grandmother’s life and struggle with Alzheimer’s and have viscerally felt family and Chinese history slipping away. Through interviews, I’ve hoped to capture as much as I can.

Last semester, I continued this work with other family members in Taiwan. When I stepped into my Great Aunt’s house, across the world I instantly felt at home. I’d been there before—the wheelchair, the staring off into the distance, the one spot she loved to watch TV. Her memory loss had placed her and my Grandmother in incredibly similar states. When I came home I compared my photographs and found these visual parallels, where their two separate homes became one.

The two of them, and the spaces they occupy, are capsules of history—stories waiting to be unlocked.

How wonderful and painful it is to care for someone elderly. To help them stand, to hear about their strength and their sorrow, to hold their hand. I’m grateful for every moment.

I’d been there before—the wheelchair, the staring off into the distance, the one spot she loved to watch TV. Her memory loss had placed her and my Grandmother in incredibly similar states. When I came home I compared my photographs and found these visual parallels, where their two separate homes became one.

The two of them, and the spaces they occupy, are capsules of history—stories waiting to be unlocked.

How wonderful and painful it is to care for someone elderly. To help them stand, to hear about their strength and their sorrow, to hold their hand. I’m grateful for every moment.

Photos of my 91-year-old Grandmother (slide 1) and my 101-year-old Great Aunt (slide 2). The two of them are some of the last living people in the world to have lived through the Japanese invasion of China in WWII, which overlapped with the Chinese Civil War.

Over the years I’ve documented my Grandmother’s life and struggle with Alzheimer’s and have viscerally felt family and Chinese history slipping away. Through interviews, I’ve hoped to capture as much as I can.

Last semester, I continued this work with other family members in Taiwan. When I stepped into my Great Aunt’s house, across the world I instantly felt at home.
