Meet Laura Park, owner and designer of Leehwa Wedding & Hanbok in Koreatown! 💜

LeeHwa Wedding & Hanbok is the largest hanbok house in the United States. Laura Park is the fourth generation of textile workers in her family and has worked in Koreatown for 36 years. Park’s Great Grandfather started her family’s textile business in North Korea. After the Korean War, he moved to South Korea, where Park’s family lived and worked for 60 years.

Hanbok is the traditional clothing of Korean people. Clothing, Park says, is a core part of Korean culture. “Ui, Sik, Ju”—Ui is the clothing, Sik is the food, Ju is housing” Park described. “So, the most important is Ui, the expression, who I am. It is the hanbok that is the Korean culture’s expression.”

I’d be lying if I said growing up in an immigrant household with traditional Korean Christian parents didn’t come with its own internal struggles. But Kim’s Convenience somehow made me see and appreciate my parents in a way I never have before.

Better than the Netflix series (and yes—the play came first), it’s raw, hilarious, and deeply moving. I found myself laughing and crying the whole time!
