I’m fully aware of some really awesome sampled pianos but Im still going to want to record the actual instruments because there are so many details that are going to give the recording more character and dynamics compared to using a midi instrument. It’s also about committing to the sound and making something unique. My performance isn’t 100% perfect when i played that part, the microphones are also picking up the felt hammers better, and how the piano reacts in the room.

I don’t mind using MIDI instruments, especially for demos, but if I actually have the instrument, I’m going to want to record it for all the final stuff. MIDI is sometimes just too perfect, and yeah you can program some realistic performances, but it’s still not the same.

Also, I really love recording this piano in here. It’s massive in this room.

These microphones are perfect and they are reliable. I know exactly what I’m going to get out of them which makes getting awesome recordings easy. Which then makes mixing even easier.

Also, little tip...if you’re band is trying to record your down drums please tune thedamn heads. You don’t need to tune it to some specific note but please make sure those drums are singing and not sounding like mess that’s out of phase.

If I wanted to try and really deaden this space it would take a lot of work. But that was never my goal, when sources like cymbals are played in here there is some gnarly wash going on and that’s all I was trying to fix because this room actually sounds really great. If I want to get some really isolated recordings I just move some panels and my gobo around to tighten things up. Also I don’t any Mixing in this place. It’s strictly for recording.

But drums sound massive in here, I love placing room mics everywhere to to capture the sound of the room when recording different sources. It makes mixes more interesting instead.

The goal was to see how fast I write, record, and program all of this while making tones from scratch and just committing to sounds. I wanted to do it all in under an hour and then when the time was up do a little mix for it.
