Hello hello!
I had the pleasure to merge my two passions, illustration and anthropology, for my friend @insta.sam.agram and his colleague Danny who have edited a great issue of the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute. It's a big deal.
The issue is about 'religious suasion', a concept they coined to describe more accurately the breadth of the transformational phenomena they've witnessed in their research. In their own words, "focusing on the rhetorical strategies, religious imaginaries, and ethical evaluations that underpin how religious actors pursue religious change in others and in and of the world, ‘religious suasion’ contributes to the development of an anthropology of influence."
All of this to say, I got to play with movement, recursive shapes and symbols and even take a jab at a little animated gif (swipe). It's been so much fun to do work with fellow anthropologists whose work is so inspiring. Tangentially, this was also a good opportunity for me to conduct research on our very interaction and how we were all using language to talk about images that were made based on a text written about social phenomena. Whew, what a mille-feuille of signs. Love it.

Today is a good day because I get to share one of my favorite projects ever and a long-time bucket list dream: the cover of the @nybooks, art directed by the brilliant and thoughtful @shaptonia.
I've learned so much about my work and the new direction it's been taking over the last year, and got me excited about illustration in a fresh way.
As I'm ending a year-long ethnographic research on illustration in a couple of months, this feels like the best send-off possible.
I'll show more of the process another time!

Hi there!
Here's a bunch of surveillance selfies from 2025 to let you know that my newsletter On Looking now offers a paid subscription, and if you like reading it half as much as I enjoy writing it, consider becoming a subscriber in 2026!
As I explained in the last letter, I'm nearing the end of my PhD and my funding ended, which means I'll get to write more often for the newsletter, but also that I'd love for that work to be somewhat paid. Also how exciting that I'm gonna finally be able to share the many insights I got from my year of fieldwork with you all!
If you enjoyed one or several of my essays over the years and you feel like making my day (week even), there's a 20% off in my latest letter (link in bio).

Here's a fun one from a while ago about looking at an artwork for 10 minutes, how it can help you reclaim your attention amidst online chaos.
Couldn't dream of more fitting assignment, obviously commissioned by the thoughtful @vinnieneu!

Hello!
I wrote a short essay about Nano Banana Pro and the supposed "end of photographic evidence" I keep hearing about on social media.
It's about how the relationship between photography and evidence has always been tenuous and complex, but also about how this relentless discourse of revolution that comes with each new AI model is exhausting.
As I'm nearing the end of the PhD, I plan on picking up the newsletter again so keep an eye out for new essays. And if you enjoy it, don't hesitate to like or comment it, it always makes my day.

These days I'm my biggest client, and I don't hate it. I'm starting a reading group in linguistic anthropology here in Cambridge and that was a fun excuse to make an old fashioned photocopied poster.
One day I'll run a fun visual culture online reading group open to anyone!

I'm slowly reconciling myself with drawing as a relaxing practice to unwind after writing all day.
