The LaTouché (@latouche) runway left the audience breathless. Bold layering, intricate new cuts, and bursts of vibrant Haitian color made each look a statement of culture and creativity.

The collection was a love letter to Haiti, a masterclass in craft, and one of the most talked-about moments of the night.

For years, we have been asking one central question: How do we scale our support for Black designers?

The answer has many layers: access, retail partnerships, funding, mentorship, visibility, and industry accountability. But the truth is, support also scales one decision at a time.

It starts with us.

It starts in our own closets.

With the designers we choose to wear.

The brands we choose to buy from.

The names we choose to follow, share, recommend, and introduce to our communities.

That is how The Closet Challenge came to be.

We wanted to create a simple, measurable way for people to turn support into action by committing 10% of their closet to Black designers.

Because Black consumers are projected to hold $2.1 trillion in buying power in 2026, yet Black designers and designers of color still represent only 1–2% of designers in major department stores.

That gap cannot be ignored.

When you join The Closet Challenge, you receive a personalized style guide and discover Black designers to shop, follow, and support, making it easier to be intentional about where your fashion dollars go.

Hundreds have already joined. Now, we want to see that number double.

Because changing the fashion industry does not only happen at scale.

It happens one closet at a time.

Kahlana Barfield Brown (@kahlanabarfield) just brought a fashion lens to a functional category 👏

The founder of KBB by Kahlana partnered with Starbucks (@starbucks) to design a limited-edition weighted vest celebrating the launch of Starbucks Coffee & Protein, the brand’s new ready-to-drink beverage made with 22 grams of complete protein.

The vest was priced at $22 as a direct nod to the beverage’s 22 grams of protein and designed with 5 pounds of customizable weights, plus a dedicated pocket made to hold the bottled drink.

What makes this collaboration layered is the way it connects product innovation, wellness culture, and fashion design. Weighted vests have become a major lifestyle trend, but Kahlana brought intention to the category by reimagining it as something people would actually want to wear.

Congratulations, @kahlanabarfield, on a sold-out collaboration with @starbucks.

Ozwald Boateng (@ozwald_boateng) is bringing fashion into the home.

The British-Ghanaian designer, known for redefining bespoke tailoring, has partnered with Savoir (@savoirbeds), a luxury British bedmaker known for handcrafted, made-to-order beds.

Their new design, “Authenticity,” reimagines the feeling of a tailored suit as a sculptural bed, complete with handcrafted oak, woven leather, and a custom headboard inspired by traditional Ghanaian Kente cloth.

Built over more than 200 hours by a single artisan, the piece is a reminder that Black design is not limited to the runway. It belongs in fashion, interiors, craftsmanship, and every space where luxury is being defined.

Standing on business 👏

HFR’s 8th Annual Designer Retreat was exactly that.

To the designers, partners, speakers, and teams who made this year unforgettable, thank you. 🖤

The room felt different this year. It was full of vision, honesty, curiosity, and conversations that reminded us why this retreat exists. Over three days, designers showed up ready to learn, connect, ask questions, share experiences, and build alongside one another with intention.

A special thank you to our partners who opened their doors, shared their expertise, and helped create real pathways for our designers.

And to our friends at @nike - thank you for continuing to walk the walk and talk the talk. From hosting us for Day 3, to the industry stop, to the Nike Designer Combine and $5,000 prize, your year-over-year partnership continues to show what meaningful investment in designers of color can look like.

This retreat set the tone for what is possible in the years to come, and we are so grateful to every designer, partner, and supporter who helped make it what it was.

Designers: tag a fellow designer who should know about the Designer Retreat.

Who’s ready for the 9th Annual Designer Retreat? 👀

The interviews are only the beginning. ✨

Through the HBCU Fashion Forum Talent Pipeline, Harlem’s Fashion Row is creating intentional pathways for the next generation of fashion, retail, and business leaders to move from access to opportunity. In partnership with American Eagle Outfitters (@aeoinc), this program connects HBCU scholars from @nccueagle and @ncatsuaggies to mentorship, industry exposure, real-world experience, and early talent visibility.

What comes next? Selected scholars will continue into a program designed to open doors, build community, and create meaningful pathways into the fashion industry. 🖤

Born and raised in Harlem. Deeply rooted in the culture. And intentional about every single thing in her closet. 🖤

@cheesmalls is a Senior Director of Product Development at Coach, a fashion storyteller, and someone who has always put her money where her heart is, behind Black designers.

In this Closet Challenge feature, Chee takes us through the pieces and designers that mean the most to her: her ride-or-die @brandonblackwoodnyc bag that goes with her on every trip, the @fenoel robes she dreamed of owning when she first started making money, the @christopherjohnrogers pieces that make color, structure, and silhouette feel effortless, and @12pmstudios sunglasses by @jeneenaylor that can transform even the simplest look.

Her words say it best: “Black designers lead with creativity, resilience, culture, inclusivity, empathy, and for me, it’s important that I support that.”

That’s exactly what The Closet Challenge is about. Commit just 10% of your closet to Black designers. Small shift. Big impact. Chee is showing you how.

Comment CLOSET below and we’ll send you the link to take the challenge and shop her full guide. Then tag 3 people to put them on 👀🖤

Out of roughly 100 HBCUs in the U.S., only 10–12 have formal fashion programs.

That means the pipeline is limited.

The opportunity is massive.

And the gap is urgent.

Yet the influence, creativity, and culture coming out of HBCU communities continue to shape the global fashion industry.

That’s why Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, President of PLC Detroit, and Brandice Daniel, CEO of Harlem’s Fashion Row and ICON360, created the HBCU Professor Summit, a space where HBCU educators and industry leaders come together to build real pathways for the next generation of fashion talent.

Now in its 4th year, the Summit is heading to Detroit.

This time last week, we were wrapping up three powerful days of access, insight, and connection, and Day 3 at Nike HQ brought it all full circle 🖤

Hearing directly from our designers reminded us why this retreat exists: to create space, open doors, and help designers of color walk into their next chapter with more clarity, confidence, and community.

A special thank you to @Nike for helping us close the retreat with intention and for continuing to invest in the future of fashion.
