An eighth grader in Kentucky just turned his graduation speech into one of the internet’s most debated viral moments.

After allegedly being told he could no longer give his original speech, Daniel Mattingly took the stage and accused his school of “racism, sexism and homophobia” in front of students, parents and staff.

Now the clip is everywhere, and people are fiercely divided over whether he was brave, disrespectful… or both.

Today is Harvey Milk Day.

In 1977, he became one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Less than a year later, he was assassinated inside City Hall alongside Mayor George Moscone.

But Harvey Milk understood something long before much of the world did: the importance of visibility. “If a bullet should enter my brain,” he once said, “let that bullet destroy every closet door.”

Milk believed that every openly queer person living honestly and visibly made the world safer for the next generation.
“The only thing they have to look forward to is hope,” he said in his famous Hope Speech. “And you have to give them hope.”

Today, Harvey Milk Day is celebrated across California in his memory and in honor of the generations of queer people who refused to disappear.
