What an incredible opening weekend of the SPECTALiA exhibit for @everywomanbiennial at @penandbrushnyc
✨I met so many wonderful artists/people sharing their stories and celebrating each other. The staff worked so hard to make this opening feel like a special party with performances, installations and dancing in the street. Thank you to all family, friends, artists and visitors!💝

Peeling Cycle (2026) is an immersive live audiovisual performance that examines how artificial intelligence participates in the social production of visibility. The work begins from the premise that AI systems do not perceive from a neutral distance, but inherit linguistic, visual, and cultural structures through which bodies are recognized, classified, and valued. For women artists, and particularly Asian immigrant women working with technology, visibility often carries a contradiction: to be seen does NOT necessarily mean to be understood, and to be interpreted does NOT necessarily mean to be recognized. Through endoscopic imagery, cloth gesture, red laser patterns, object detection, word-vector association, language-model interpretation, and real-time visual generation, the work stages AI as both a technical pipeline and a performative mirror of gendered perception.
The performance unfolds across four scenes: Gestation, Birth, Maturation, and Peeling/Shedding. These scenes trace a cycle from enclosure to emergence, from social conditioning to rupture, while asking how AI inherits the social structures through which gendered and racialized bodies are seen. The project asks whether machine perception can be reconditioned through situated memory, lived experience, and embodied performance; what happens when AI is asked not only to classify the world, but to reinterpret it through the perspective of women artists whose experiences are often overlooked or mistranslated; and how live audiovisual performance can make these processes sensible without reducing them to technical explanation. In this way, Peeling Cycle positions AI not as an autonomous creative agent, but as a contested site where inherited machine knowledge, bodily gesture, personal memory, and social gaze are staged, interrupted, and reimagined.

20 slides here on an IG post are not enough AT ALL to grasp any sense of this performance. You possibly “get it”only if you physically experienced it in person…
I and Nanae literally poured everything to this work. Time, money, skills, energy, and passion. Trials and errors, over and over. There were days we worked for 12 hours together nonstop. We constantly created, discussed, and improved, until this big day for us.
I was really happy when the audience was reacting during the performance in real time. You all were the best crowd we could ever ask for. Thank you all SO much for being present and witnessing the colorful, silly, joyful chaos we created wholeheartedly.
“Dear humans,
I believe in each one of you.
You can do it.”

The Biennial has provided opportunities for thousands of artists and performers in NY, and sister cities in LA and London. This week’s Hot Coffee🔥☕️ with artist C.Finley @iamfinley , Founder, and Molly M. Caldwell, Executive Director of Every Woman Biennial, New York @everywomanbiennial on view through April 11 at Pen+Brush @penandbrushnyc
“NC: The salon-style density and large number of artists create a powerful collective statement—but how do you ensure individual artists aren’t lost within that abundance?
MC: This is a great question! I think the answer is two-fold. First, each piece has to stand on its own, whether it is a quiet place for eyes to rest, a color explosion, or stands out in scale, medium, or texture. We try to create a balance of ideas and media, as well as create dynamic and thoughtful conversations between the artists’ work. Finley then brings the works to life, installing the walls through themes, color, shapes, and scale; in essence, creating harmony versus dissonance. The result is planned cacophony! I think people naturally look at what is attractive to them, so one person might see something that catches their eye while another sees something completely different. That is the beauty of the show; there is something for everyone.
NC: How do you reconcile authorship in your studio practice with the radical decentralization of authorship in the Every Woman Biennial?
CF: With so much artwork to display, it’s quite challenging. I begin by looking for connections and conversations, and I create installations through color, content, and material. A large part of my personal work is about color relationships, and I am starting to understand that everything in my life is about relationships. ”

This Saturday is the final day of the Every Woman Biennial, a powerful show at Pen + Brush (29 E 22nd St, NYC). Pictured here is my piece Lipstick and Cigarettes, a self‑portrait inspired by the long cultural link between women, lipstick, cigarettes, and the charged mix of glamour, power, pleasure, and rebellion they’ve come to signify.
