Still my favourite room we have ever assembled, which was featured in Vogue Living some years ago.This snapshot I took might not be the best quality, but it regardlesscaptures the reason this space ticks all of my own boxes — bright — colorful yet subdued — bold art on feature — combinations of new and old — modern minded but classically restrained — proud with pomp, but eclectic and unrigid — and a happy client as a cherry on top 🍒. The curation also pulls together some of the best makers, past and present — the Tommi Parzinger chaise in the foreground set the tone.And our custom Chantilly ottoman to the left fits neatly at least.

Of our young and evolving portfolio, this installation of carved walnut pivot doors, fabricated and installed by some precious artisans, garners the most interest….. it makes me glad that people still like a bit of ‘rough and rugged’ in this new digi-tailored age.

Up the hill.
The Primary Bedroom at this ground-up constructed home was completed earlier than the Cellar shown in the last post.We debated keeping the lining boards on the walls and ceiling natural and raw, however we and the client opted at the end to finish them in a distressed pigment to give a rustic-yet-ethereal feel.The generous drapery pushes that later cause.
The centerpiece is a poster bed from our firm’s own custom collection, capped with a recycled putti pendant (salvaged from a Upper East Side refurb about 15 years prior) that we retrofitted with a few pieces of agate… to bring the good juju, of course.
We wanted a layered look, so we literally piled a hide over an antique silk rug, which also added a welcome asymmetry… the early lamps by Pelletier that flank the bed helped further the organic edge.
We wanted a fireplace for both atmosphere and function, but we did not want it to overbear the delicate space, so we landed it lonely in the corner as a romantic folly.
Perhaps most affective are the Japanese screens which we archive-ly framed into the cavity sliding doors to both the Wardrobe and Ensuite; the rear sides (in blue silk) were mounted similarly at the rear of those door (as seen from the view out of the En-suite).
We needed something ‘stand-alone’ and a tad ‘faster’ above the bed to add a cherry of balanced contradiction (which we hope is a hallmark of our firm’s aesthetic, whether the style leans more traditional or contemporary). We found a somewhat rare Wesselmann at a New York auction and urgently acquired it to play the role.The wardrobe bench by Denis Wagner up-shifts the gears once more.
To assemble this required serious trust and faith on the part of the client, which we earned, received and cherished at every turn.

The focus here is on the wine cellar, which was a true collaboration with our delightfully curious and motivated client, who during covid managed the portions of this build that we could not while travel was locked down.Although we documented the space within an inch of its life, especially because of the use of mostly recycled materials and organic finishes, it required a fluid contradiction of control and surrender, right down to the custom washes created to better blend the patina of the various timbers and stones (if you look closely, you can see old advertising paper still glued to various boards). Since it was completed a couple years ago, it has been used for small and large events alike — the lead snap is of me and my buddy donning a contemporary Bauta that was prepared for a pending masquerade at the house.The best part is its lack of presentation pomp — though it houses a formidable collection of wines as well as gems like a period samurai armor and a pair of collectible tables by the Lavernes, it is accessed via a motorized hatch in the hallway floor — unassuming.

Up the hill.
It has been such a busy and wonder-filled month that I haven’t until now had a chance to proudly share an article published in @ad_italia a few weeks ago (link to the story is in our bio). The focus here is on the wine cellar, which was a true collaboration with our delightfully curious and motivated client, who during covid managed the portions of this build that we could not while travel was locked down.Although we documented the space within an inch of its life, especially because of the use of mostly recycled materials and organic finishes, it required a fluid contradiction of control and surrender, right down to the custom washes created to better blend the patina of the various timbers and stones (if you look closely, you can see old advertising paper still glued to various boards). Dylan Farrell Design x PIERMARQ* are pleased to present Sky, an exhibition of new work by Sydney-based artist Maximilian Daniels in Quogue, New York.

An open-door reception will be held at 44 Quogue Street (in the barn), Quogue, New York on Friday August 29th between 3pm - 7pm and Saturday August 30th between 2 - 4pm.

Sky showcases a new body of work exploring color and form. Known for his dynamic blend of abstraction and mixed media, Daniels’ work evokes emotional resonance through bold, immersive compositions. His practice focuses on observation and technique through a slow layering of translucent pigments. The sculptural quality of the work is achieved through repeated processes and the materiality of wooden framing, bronze leaf, and oil paint on glue sized linen, as well as the delicate addition of texture and gestural marks. Daniels’ paintings develop as a response to his studio environment, particularly weather conditions and the interplay of light and glass.

Maximilian Daniels (b. 1991) lives and works in Sydney, Australia.

The New York Times ( @nytimes ) yesterday released an online story about a home we completed outside the Yarra Valley — the feature goes to print in the Sunday section shortly.This reel is a small bundle of AI enhanced snippets from the story.

Our firm has been shying away from social media this past year or so.This is partially due to being busy… perhaps because of social media fatigue.. and equally we have been working on several projects where our clients prefer privacy.But perhaps most significantly, I unfortunately find it hard to get behind a social media post about an interior fit-out in light of everything else going on in this shaky world.Each time I go to post, I just press ‘delete’ because I can’t take my soliloquy about a photo seriously… regardless of the pride we have around the work and/or relationships.

But this story is different, maybe just because it is an escape — literally for our client — but also figuratively an escape from regularity.We have completed plenty of impressive homes, all of which we cherish for different reasons.But this home is appropriate for ‘now’, because when you walk in, everything else just sort of falls off.What better time to share it — to forget about politics, war, the economy, climate change… just for a minute.

It ardently displays the merits of realised ideals — a fight for fantasy — the joy of sharing collected memories — and the satisfaction of exercising healthy obsession.

The client’s lifestyle inspired and is inspired by the home… guests feel like they have stepped through the looking glass when they arrive… and we are lucky to have been part of the journey, where we found many good friends at the end, and learned about the type of experiences we want to offer our collaborators.

We will share more of it in the coming weeks — we hope it inspires you too.
