“At a time when LGBTQ+ communities around the world are facing growing hostility, and while so many international development programmes are being scaled back, the UK Government’s decision to protect funding for global LGBTQ+ rights sends an important and hopeful message.

Today’s announcement recognises that protecting LGBTQ+ people from violence, discrimination and exclusion is fundamental to global health, human rights and human dignity.

We are deeply grateful to the ministers, officials, parliamentarians and advocates who worked tirelessly to ensure this support was maintained.

The UK has shown international leadership at a time when it is urgently needed. When governments stand up for human rights and dignity, they help create a safer, healthier future for everyone — and move us closer to ending AIDS once and for all.”

The Glenn Gould Prize is among the world’s most prestigious cultural honours, celebrating a living artist whose work has profoundly enriched humanity through the arts.

Elton John was named the 15th Laureate by an international jury of cultural leaders, thinkers, authors, playwrights, politicians and artists in recognition of his extraordinary artistic achievement and humanitarian contributions.

The Prize Gala evening featured an all-Canadian lineup - personally selected by Elton - including host Eric McCormack, Sarah McLachlan, Diana Krall, The Beaches, LOONY, Ron Sexsmith, Jeremy Dutcher, Saya Gray, Emily D’Angelo, Ryan Wang, and more, each reinterpreting Elton’s iconic catalogue.

Statement on U.S. House Appropriations advancing funding for the fight against AIDS:

We applaud the U.S. House Appropriations Committee for providing billions of dollars in 2027 for the fight against AIDS around the world. This funding will help countries gradually take over and run their own HIV programs, while also supporting the important work of Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.

As the process moves forward in the Senate, we hope that additional resources can be found to ensure the U.S. pledge to the Global Fund of $4.6 billion over three years is reached on an annual basis.

We also hope immediate ‘bridge’ funding will be sent to the front lines to help keep people alive while new agreements with partner countries are finalized.

Less than two months ago, a Republican-led Congress and the President came together to pass a bipartisan budget that reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to ending the AIDS epidemic - a goal first set out in President Trump’s 2019 State of the Union.

Today, we have extraordinary new tools to prevent HIV and treat it more effectively than ever before. Ending AIDS is within reach. But progress is fragile, and without sustained investment, it can quickly be reversed.
 
Now is not the moment to pull back. It is the moment to double down.
 
We urge both Congress and the Administration to once again come together to protect and strengthen funding for HIV/AIDS. Millions of lives depend on it, and the opportunity to end this epidemic, once and for all, must not be lost.
