DAY 16: Chike Ozah is a New Orleans storyteller whose work reminds us how powerful the right lens can be. Born and raised in the city, Chike carries the rhythm, resilience, and complexity of New Orleans into every frame he creates. As one half of the directing duo Coodie & Chike, his vision helped form the early visuals of Kanye West alongside his creative partner Coodie, documenting pivotal moments long before the world fully understood what was unfolding. That same long-term dedication later became the Emmy-winning documentary series jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, a project that redefined patience and belief in storytelling.

As a visual creator myself, I have deep gratitude for what Chike represents. He shows that you can document culture with integrity, stay committed to your subject, and still reach a global stage. His work is layered, intentional, and rooted in truth, and that inspires those of us who are behind the camera trying to tell our own stories with care. New Orleans doesn’t just produce performers, we produce visionaries. And Chike Ozah is one of them. 🎬⚜️

A recent memorable moment for me was shooting behind-the-scenes footage on a Hi8 film camcorder for the 2025 Essence magazine cover commemorating the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Being able to witness and be a part of the creative process in any capacity was truly a dream come true.

Watching some of my favorite creators, E. Buckles and Chike Ozah, both from New Orleans, create something so powerful from an experience that was deeply tragic was incredibly inspiring. They reclaimed the narrative, transforming pain into beauty and using it to move the culture forward.

The Katrina Babies are rebuilding the spirit of the city by rising above it all. New Orleans learned to fly.
