Australia has some of the lowest smoking rates in the world - the result of decades of evidence-based policies that have saved lives. But this progress is under threat.

Today, Cancer Council and organisations from across Australia’s public health sector have come together to publish an open letter to all Australians.

Big tobacco is pushing proposals to reduce the cost of tobacco products, creating a pathway for more Australians to become addicted to nicotine.

Here are some ways we can protect the progress we've made:

👉uphold strict transparency and protections against tobacco industry interference
👉maintain proven measures like tobacco taxation, advertising restrictions and public education campaigns
👉strengthen action on illicit tobacco through enforcement and support to help people quit - not by making tobacco cheaper
👉 expose industry tactics and hold decision-makers accountable.

As we approach #WorldNoTobaccoDay, we’re ‘Unmasking Big Tobacco’ and advocating for stronger protections against tobacco-industry influence, to help protect Australians from the harms of tobacco.

Read our open letter, signed together with 14 organisations, on why protecting these policies matters, via the link in bio.

☕Every cuppa helps...

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is a community event that raises funds to make a difference for those impacted by cancer. Almost 1 in 2 Australians are diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85, and the funds raised are a vital way for us to help change that.

We hope you have a tea-riffic time during today's #BiggestMorningTea 💛 Tag us and let us know what you're doing or why you're hosting in the comments below.

Our volunteers do an amazing job of supporting people living with cancer. Week in, week out, they give of their time and energy to help wherever help is needed. Whether it’s driving patients to treatments, helping at our Christmas gift wrapping stalls, or volunteering in our retail stores, they turn up with warmth and enthusiasm.

This National Volunteer Week, we want to thank our volunteers for all they do to ease the burden for people living with cancer.

If you’re interested in finding out about how to volunteer with the Cancer Council, call 1300 65 65 85 or check out the ‘Get involved’ page via the link in bio.

Seasons change, but the Australian sun shines on! ☀️

Even on cooler or cloudy Autumn days the UV levels in Australia can still damage your skin.

Make sure you're all over your Autumn sun safety by:
📱Checking the UV levels on your phone weather app or the SunSmart app.

When the UV Index is 3 or above, it's important to take extra care to protect your skin from harmful UV radiation.

Follow these steps to ensure you’re keeping safe and minimising your risk of sun damage and skin cancer:
🥼SLIP on long sleeves and cover as much skin as possible
🧴SLOP on the SPF 50+ sunscreen, and reapply every 2 hours if you're outside.
🤠SLAP on a broad-brimmed hat
😎SLIDE on sunglasses
🏖️SEEK shade where possible.

Head to the link in bio for more about UV levels and sun safety.

Look after the basics and you’re already one step ahead. 💪

You can’t control everything on site, but a few smart moves like grabbing your hat and sunnies, or wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce exposure to hazards, can go a long way when it comes to looking after yourself on the job.

This year’s World Day for Health and Safety at Work focuses on psychosocial safety. And this starts with what you can control. Knowing you are taking care of your own health and safety brings peace of mind, and this matters even more if you work outdoors or around carcinogenic agents.

Each year, around 3.6 million Australian workers (that’s 2 in 5) are exposed to at least one carcinogen at work. This can include diesel engine exhaust, silica dust, welding fumes, asbestos and UV radiation. Some of the jobs with the greatest exposure include construction workers, welders, farmers, miners and transport workers.

Understanding the risks and taking simple precautions can make a real difference to your peace of mind and ultimately your health.

For World Immunisation Week we're spotlighting the HPV (human papillomavirus) and HBV (Hepatitis B) vaccines and their role in cancer prevention.

Some important things to consider:
👉Hepatitis B or C viruses which result in long term (chronic) infection can cause liver cancer. This is the biggest known risk factor for primary liver cancer in Australia.
👉There is no vaccine for Hepatitis C but a medicine known as direct acting antivirals (DAA) can cure it.
👍Cervical cancer can be prevented by routine screenings (for anyone who does not have symptoms) for those aged 25-74, and the HPV vaccine, which is safe and effective.
👍All people who have a cervix aged 25-74 should have a cervical screening test every five years, even if you have had the HPV vaccination.
👍While the HPV vaccine protects against some types of HPV, it doesn't protect against them all - and no vaccine is 100% effective. The HPV vaccine also would not have treated any existing HPV infections.
👉While vaccinations are highly effective, if you're experiencing any symptoms please do not hesitate to contact your GP or call 13 11 20 and speak to one of our specially-trained staff.

To find out more, head to cancer.org.au and search HPV or HBV vaccine.

We believe no one should face cancer alone.

It's estimated around 169,000 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer this year - and many of these people (and their loved ones) will need support.

Everyone should be able to access the best cancer support and information available, whatever their background, postcode or cancer type.

Call 13 11 20 (for free) for questions, emotional support, guidance and trusted cancer information.

Cancer can bring up a lot of challenging emotions.

We believe supporting people’s mental health is a crucial aspect of cancer care. We also recognise that needs can change during the different stages of cancer.

Cancer is challenging for loved ones too, so it's important to acknowledge carers and families are also affected by cancer and may need emotional support too.

Today is World Psycho-oncology Day, recognising the need to integrate mental health support into cancer care.

If you or a loved one are impacted by cancer you can talk to a qualified health professional on 13 11 20. This is a free and confidential service.
