California Main Street
We are CAMS, a diverse network of communities supported by Main Street Approach practitioners working to revitalize historic districts. #camainstreet
This past week, California Main Street communities joined thousands of place professionals from across the country in Tulsa this week for the Main Street Now Conference 2026 presented by Main Street America.
Leaders from nine California cities attended three days of hands-on workshops, mobile tours, and 100+ sessions focused on strengthening downtowns through collaboration, economic resilience, and creative placemaking.
We proudly watched as one of our CA Main Street communities, the East Oakland Black Cultural Zone, presented an interactive session on community transformation through collaboration.
We explored Tulsa’s historic neighborhoods, sampled delicious local eats, dodged a tornado, and partied at the Big Bash.
The Main Street movement is growing in California. Attending this national conference is an important opportunity to share our communities’ stories, learn from work happening across the country, and build camaraderie with fellow Main Streeters.
We’re already making plans for Detroit in May 2027.
Participating local programs:
MainStreet Oceanside, Downtown Vacaville, Viva Downtown Redding, Richmond Main Street Initiative, Gilroy Downtown Business Association, Downtown Escondido, Pleasanton Downtown Association, Encinitas 101 Main Street Association, Black Cultural Zone - Oakland

Thrilled to announce that the Petaluma Signs Project will be presenting at the California Main Street Conference in San Luis Obispo this week! I'll be joining a panel discussion titled "Glowing History: Restoring Neon Signs on Main Street" to share our campaign to restore Petaluma's iconic neon chick sign.
The session will explore how historic neon can be viewed as public art and how its preservation can serve as a catalyst for economic and cultural revitalization. I'm honored to present alongside Blake Fisher, Program Coordinator for Viva Downtown Redding, who'll discuss the recent restoration of the historic Greyhound Bus neon sign, now shining at the Redding Area Bus Authority's Tehama Street entrance. Russell Kwong, owner of the 98-year-old Mee Heng Low Noodle Shop—one of the last surviving remnants of San Luis Obispo's historic Chinatown—will share how a grant from American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation is funding his restaurant's neon sign restoration and façade improvements.
Looking forward to connecting with others passionate about preserving these glowing pieces of our Main Street heritage!

The annual CAMS Conference is an opportunity for commercial district revitalization leaders to explore Main Street Approach best practices, identify key trends, and discover new economic development strategies for their cities and towns.
This three-day educational event includes workshops, networking and curated experiences designed for Main Street directors, downtown managers, board members, key volunteers, city liaisons and partner organizations to connect.
This year’s conference destination is Downtown San Luis Obispo (SLO). Nestled in the rolling hills of California’s central coast, SLO’s bustling downtown features tree-lined streets, turn-of-the-century Spanish architecture, and vibrant public art. Storefronts on Higuera Street are alive with indie boutiques, local coffee shops, and a vibrant food scene. Explore the city’s historic Mission, quirky Bubblegum Alley, and award-winning Thursday night Farmers’ Market, SLO is a Great America Main Street Winner (1999) and one of the initial Main Street programs to launch in California (1986).
The CAMS 2025 Conference is hosted by California Main Street, Downtown SLO, Visit San Luis Obispo and made possible by sponsorships from Main Street America, Square, California Office of Historic Preservation, Visit California, National Trust for Historic Preservation, and Civitas Advisors with support from Small Business Majority and Switchfoot Creative.
Sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities are available.
Registration rates increase on September 15.
We look forward to welcoming you to San Luis Obispo to experience the magic and history of the central coast.

A truly cinematic art installation was unveiled in Downtown Vacaville today. Inspired by ’80s and ’90s-era Japanese anime and manga art. The works were created by David Cho and John Horton and span the exterior and interior of Brenden Theatres.
Vacaville is the latest Brenden location to feature original art joining Concord and Modesto. The projects are made possible with support from the Brenden Mann Foundation, 333 Arts, and Local Edition with support from local government.
