What is CPKC’s Broken Rail Detection Technology?

It’s real-time, data-driven track monitoring using an electrical circuit.

If the rail is intact, the circuit is complete. If it’s broken, the circuit is open.

Data comes in every ten minutes, so we quickly assess and identify broken rails to keep trains safe and moving.

New machine learning algorithms reduced false positive detections by 45%. Ongoing enhancements to this in-house innovation are a key reason why CPKC continues to lead in safety.

That’s innovation in action.

Last week, we joined in with the city of El Campo for its third Annual Touch-a-Truck event.

CPKC proudly brought one of our hi-rail trucks, which stood alongside an impressive lineup of different vehicles, including police cars, fire trucks and so much more. Community members and families enjoyed the chance to get up close, climb inside, and learn about the truck's crucial role in keeping our railway running safely and efficiently.

These trucks use state-of-the-art ultrasonic induction systems to detect internal rail flaws. Operators mark the defective locations and relay that to the engineering maintenance team to change out the rails.

Edith Rodríguez Silva and Cinthya Melissa Guillén Pinales are committed to shaping how CPKC teams show up for each other and for our customers.

Through their commitment to leadership and continuous development, they are building stronger leaders, raising performance, and reinforcing a culture of accountability, growth and excellence.

Cinthya brings leadership to life through her experience in the Operations Centre in Monterrey, Mexico, connecting real-world insights with leadership principles, delivering clear feedback, and helping employees grow with targeted development plans.

Edith draws on her own trailblazing journey, becoming Mexico’s first female locomotive engineer just one year after being hired, to inspire others. Her story and presence encourage leaders to act with integrity and accountability.

Together, they’re developing the next generation of world-class railroaders at CPKC. Their efforts earned them a CEO Award for Excellence in the Develop People category.

This week, the #CPKC team traveled to Taiwan and visited the headquarters of @yangmingofficial and@evergreen.line, two of the largest container shipping lines in the world.

President and CEO Keith Creel personally thanked Yang Ming President Kevin Lee and his senior leadership team for trusting CPKC to earn their business every day and to celebrate our recent contract extension.

Evergreen became a CPKC customer in 2018 and over the past eight years we have earned their trust to become the shipping line’s strategic rail partner in Canada, and now with our three-nation network, the only Evergreen rail partner with direct reach into Canada, the United States and Mexico. Mr. Creel thanked Evergreen President Kuang-hui Wu for the honor of moving their freight across North America.

Mr. Creel gifted models of a CPKC locomotive to Mr. Lee and Mr. Wu in celebration of the enduring business relationships that continue to grow together, while receiving vessel models in return from both company presidents.

“Congratulations to the CPKC commercial and operating teams that create value in the marketplace every day for our strategic partners like Yang Ming and Evergreen,” said Mr. Creel, who was accompanied by CPKC commercial team members Jordan Kajfasz, Misha Murakami and Willy Wang. “When our customers win in the marketplace on the wheels of our network, we win too.”

These successes are made possible by the strength of our 20,000 CPKC railroaders and unrivalled network connecting all three countries.

Congratulations to Kiera Sobolewski, Specialist Data Science & AI, on being named a 2026 Rising Star by Progressive Railroading.

Kiera is always striving for efficiency. Through her leadership, her team improved CPKC’s broken rail detector accuracy by 45 percent after introducing machine learning to our algorithms.

This past weekend at CPKC Stadium, volunteers gave KC Current fans butterfly milkweed plants, a small gift with a big impact.

CPKC strengthens its commitment to biodiversity through events like this, putting action directly into the hands of the community. “In just two years, we’ve distributed nearly 5,000 milkweed plants, helping rebuild critical habitat along one of the world’s most important migration routes,” said Nick Pryor, Manager, Sustainability.

Monarchs lay their eggs exclusively on milkweed, and their caterpillars rely on it as a food source, making it critical to their multi-generational migration between Mexico and Canada.

“The monarch is an indicator species for pollinators which are in decline. Our efforts to promote monarch conservation also benefit pollinators more broadly, which are keystone species in the ecosystem,” Nick shared. “Planting milkweed is one of the simplest ways people can make a meaningful difference for pollinators right in their own backyard.”

Butterfly milkweed, a native, non-invasive plant with vibrant orange blooms, grows easily and supports monarchs and biodiversity across our rail network and communities.

Celebrating safety excellence at CPKC.

In Q1, teams across our network delivered impressive safety milestones that reflect their commitment to looking out for one another every day:

🦺 The Signals & Communications Maintenance team in Golden, B.C., reached an incredible 6 years injury-free. The team achieved this milestone while working in the Rocky Mountains, some of the most challenging terrain on our network
🛠️ The Mechanical Car team in Thunder Bay, Ont., marked 2 years injury-free, maintaining vital rail operations at a key northern hub and grain gateway for the rest of our network.

These achievements are a testament to the dedication, care and professionalism of our railroaders. Congratulations to both teams for leading by example.

Together, we continue our commitment to being the safest and best performing Class I railway in North America.

Meet Luisa Daniela Monroy López, Jr. Manager of Control and Operations and the first woman Train Dispatcher at KCSM, now CPKC de México!

After just a year at the company, she applied to be a dispatcher in 2014. Despite rotating schedules, college studies and raising her children, Luisa never stopped striving for her dreams.

Inspired by her family’s legacy and her father, Luisa’s accomplishments have paved the way for more women in rail.

Her message:
"Today nothing stops us, we have the ability to develop in any field. If you have a dream, work hard, perseverance will lead you to success."

When crossing train tracks, keep your head up and your eyes off your phone. Trains are faster and quieter than you think — so always stop, look both ways and listen. The Southeast Mexico Express (SMX) just got faster.

This week, CPKC and CSX implemented an enhanced SMX premium service providing truck competitive transit times between Mexico and Dallas and growing markets in the U.S. Southeast, including Atlanta, Charlotte and Jacksonville. Using the CPKC-CSX direct Class I connection in Alabama, the SMX offers an efficient, secure corridor giving more flexibility and optionality to our customers.

Capital investments made way for higher speeds now providing a ~20 to ~45 percent improvement in SMX travel times.
