Turns out my “I don’t do private parties” policy gets surprisingly negotiable when the party is celebrating one of my all-time favorite pinot noirs. This weekend, I put my best surreal foot forward for @challenwinery ‘s 23 release party. In order: Peking Duck Consommé, Olive Tapenade, Chinese Short Rib Cupcakes, Lobster & Corn Sno-cones, Grilled Mushroom Pizza, and Sweet Potato Gnocchi. No Kid Hungry, the organization behind ChefCycle, threw an epic fundraising bash at L.A.’s Rolling Greens on Saturday night that rocked the fancy crowd’s already-high expectations. i was one of 60 chefs challenged to bring our A-game—which was beyond daunting considering the company. Along with my ChefCycle buddy Ted Cizma, we represented and served my Wheel Nuts (Saint Agur cheese sandwiched between two candied walnuts, drizzled with wild honey, and presented on a rotating Colnago wheel, circa 1985). Yes, that’s @duffgoldman and @chefsherryyard crashing our booth! @teamcizma @nokidhungry

was streaming Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie last night when i realized i had squirreled away a couple of those curious Orbit bottles a million years ago. loved seeing some of the old Queen St. haunts, including the Rivioli — where i had better luck than Matt and Jay in booking Jane Siberry on many occasions. i can still taste the crispy Vietnamese spring rolls. @jaymccarrol @ntbtstm

Of course, the real hero in the story is Elise, the brave, independent, sparkling soul who has taught us so much over the course of the five surgeries that have brought her from Cameroon to our house in Los Angeles during the past four years. In appreciation, I donated a multi-course tasting dinner paired with collectable wines, for four diners at the chef’s table in our house. It was auctioned off (twice!), raising a total of $11,000. That money will help Mending Kids continue their mission of providing life-saving surgeries (over 6000 and counting) for kids all over the world. Kudos to Isabelle Fox, who has once again pulled off an extraordinary event with her seemingly limitless resourcefulness. @marysuemilliken @mendingkids @isnotwas
