Join us for a celebration of the Bureau and a farewell party for Donnie & Greg, who, after 13-plus years of stewarding the Bureau, are soon leaving for the greener and gayer pastures of Portland! There will be eating, there will be drinking, there will be dancing, and there will be a raffle to support Hive Mind Books’ ongoing effort to take over from Donnie & Greg and keep the Bureau alive! And most importantly there will be you all – queer people who love queer culture, queer books, and queer community! RSVP LINK IN BIO!

💥 Help Save the Last Queer Bookstore in Manhattan!

Hello, friends. We’re coming to you today to ask for your help to do something huge. (This is NOT an April Fools joke.)

The Bureau of General Services—Queer Division, located in the LGBT Center in the West Village, is the only queer bookstore in Manhattan dedicated to trans and queer books and events. For 13 years, founders Donnie and Greg have built a big community around queer art, literature, performance, and culture.

In May, Donnie and Greg are leaving New York. If someone does not take over the Bureau, it will close, and Manhattan will no longer have a queer bookstore.

❤️‍🔥 We cannot let that happen. We need our queer spaces, especially now, when queer literature is under extreme censorship and trans people are being targeted by legislation that threatens their human rights,

🌈 Hive Mind Books has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $50,000 by June 1 to acquire the Bureau and keep it open. As part of this endeavour, we would also re-open the cafe on the first floor of the Center, which has been vacant for more than a year, and revive that community space.

💥 We need your help to do this! Head to the link in our bio to learn more and to make a donation. And help us spread the word!

Over the coming weeks, we’ll share more about the Bureau’s history and Hive Mind Books’s plans to grow and sustain this queer cultural hub.

❤️‍🔥 🏳️‍🌈 Let’s keep queer literature alive and thriving in New York City!

THANK YOU!

⚡️ NYC Author Event: New fiction about Colombia’s queer underground and trans history ⚡️

Julián Delgado Lopera in conversation with Angie Cruz
Pretend You’re Dead and I Carry You
Friday May 29 7pm
At the Bureau, Manhattan’s queer bookstore

“Every once in a while you come across a book so bursting with life that the pages seem to be sprouting, delivered in a never-heard-before idiom that must have been invented just to transmit so much aliveness. Pretend You’re Dead and I Carry You is that book and Julián Delgado Lopera is one of the most exciting writers in all the Americas.” - Torrey Peters, author of Detransition, Baby

⚡️ ⚡️⚡️

Join us at the Bureau to celebrate the highly anticipated new novel by Julián Delgado Lopera. The reviews for this new work rave about Lopez’s style, mixing Spanglish with unique language to tell a story about intergenerational queer relationships, travesti ancestors, self-loathing, 1990s Bogota queer nightlife, and much more.

Lopera will be joined in conversation by Angie Cruz, author of Dominicana. A book signing will follow the conversation.

This event is free to attend. RSVP at the link in our bio or at www.bgsqd.com.

Isn’t she looooovely? Isn’t she wonderful?

Exciting developments this week at the Bureau Cafe. The espresso machine has been installed!

We’re aiming for a June 1 open for our cafe on the first floor of the @lgbtcenternyc. Right now we’re busy bringing over equipment and ordering supplies. We’re considering June our very celebratory soft open. It will take us a little while to figure out the cafe’s bookish vibe.

While we harness our inner interior decorators and spruce things up, we’ll be open and serving a menu of espresso-based beverages, drip coffee, matcha, tea, and some fun specials for Pride month! And we’ll have pasties and snacks.

We can’t wait to be an even bigger part of the community here. Stay tuned for more.

Entangled States: A Life According to Quantum Physics
Karmela Padavic-Callaghan in conversation with Seven Rasmussen
🔗 Free to attend - RSVP at link in bio

🌟 ❤️‍🔥

“I see physics everywhere. It offers itself to me when I try to make sense of all the paths my life did and did not take, it reassures me when I try to reconcile all the identities that I feel describe me.”

Join us for a conversation with scientist and journalist Karmela Padavic-Callaghan about using physics to meditate on being nonbinary in a field dominated by cishet men, on building a life in a new country, and on cause, effect, future, and destiny. They’ll talk with fellow author and astrobiologist, Seven Rasmussen.

“Queerness, as I have come to understand it, is always future-oriented, always a state of becoming.”

About the Author
Karmela Padavic-Callaghan is a scientist, a journalist, and an educator based in New York City. A staff writer at New Scientist, they report on physics, materials science, and quantum technology. They hold a PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics and atomic, molecular and optical physics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Thanks so much to @barrywalterswriter for stopping by the Bureau to sign copies of his big new book, Mighty Real: A History of LGBTQ Music, 1969-2000.

They’re all signed with “Gay Love,” in honor of Sylvester.

🪩 🌈

From the underground dance floors of the Seventies to the global charts of the Nineties, LGBTQ artists and audiences shaped music’s sound, style, and spirit. In Mighty Real, veteran music journalist Barry Walters chronicles its LGBTQ history from the Velvet Underground to the 21st century as he honors the artists who redefined gender, defied tradition, and dared to challenge sexual norms. He connects the dots between David Bowie’s dazzling reinventions, Grace Jones’s androgynous glamor, Prince’s boundary-shattering sexuality, and the radical candor of the Indigo Girls to prove they’re all doing the same thing: fighting oppression.

Signed copies are in stock now at the Bureau!

✨ This Sunday at the Bureau ✨

Poet Kelsey L. Smoot, gender theorist and author of the debut DOPAMINE collection Soulmate as a Verb, performs his powerful lyrical work and talks with visual artist/performer/print maker and curator Lo Smith about the evolution and lived experience of artistry for Black queer artists across mediums.

This event is happening Sunday 5/17 at 3pm at the Bureau. It is free and open to the public. After the conversation, Kelsey will sign copies of their book.

RSVP at the link in our bio. Join us!

About The Book:

“The simple yet fraught experience of embodiment lies at the thrumming heart of Kelsey L. Smoot’s SOULMATE AS A VERB. Bodies make love possible, they enable tender connection and transmit electric joy, all while leaving one vulnerable to discord and abuse, heartbreak and grief. Like a body, Smoot’s daring poetry metabolizes cruelty, seeking the tender knowledge and kinships that allow for buoyant survival. The subjectivity of a Black, trans self becomes a prism, shining a variegated intellect on everything from suburbia to Palestine, top surgery to police violence.”

The subjectivity of a Black, trans self becomes a prism, shining a variegated intellect on everything from suburbia to Palestine, top surgery to police violence.”
